DONUTS 20 WATER STREET, PORT PERRY EIVIIVI Sa = AK TAY BUTERA Art Brunton of Port Perry is a happy man these days after winning four best of breed first place ribbons at the Royal Winter Fair for chickens and ducks. He won for Rhode Island Red Standards and Bantams: New Hampshire Reds; and Khaki Ducks. Mr. Brunton has been winning ribbons for his Rhode Island Red for many years but this was the first time he took four best in breed awards at the Royal. And the ribbons had special meaning for him this year as it was just this summer that a dog jumped the fence and slaughtered many of his prize birds. Mr. Brunton shares the ribbons with his son David. Utica area news by Vera Brown United Church News: Thursday at 8 p.m. the Session and Stewards will meet at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Keith Ashton. Birthday greetings to two of my neighbours this week. First to Mrs. Delia Harper will be 83 years and to Mr. Scott Wilbur who will reach the big *'21"'. Scott was home from Thunder Bay on the weekend and celebrated with his parents, grandparents Mr. and Mrs. George Beare and friend Miss Kelly Steele by having dinner in Oshawa on Saturday evening. Mr. Russell Lindsay's sister Mrs. Mary Currah from Gelert has been a guest of Mr. and Mrs. Lindsay for the past week. Best wishes to Mrs. Vera Taylor for a speedy recovery, we miss seeing you out around. Rumour has it that a neighbour would like George Harper to move his barn back a few feet from the road. Personally I think a steel fence in front of the barn and house might keep the cars out. Finally, congratulations to our two Junior hockey players Wilbur and Brown who put on quite a scoring display on Sunday night at the Scugog Arena. Their team is on a winning streak but this Saturday night come up against the top team Bow- manville Eagles and they would sure like a win here. Go to it MoJacks. lk: No money to help fight VIA Scugog Township council _ 'decided Monday not to con- tribute money to help a passenger group fight a legal battle to keep the Toronto- Havelock passenger train on the rails. In a letter to council, the Toronto-Havelock passenger association asked Scugog Township for $1000 "to help defray legal costs" as the Association is taking the fed- eral government to court over the decision to cut the service next year. Although the council is on record supporting the Assoc- iation's fight to keep the train on the rails, members felt Monday it would not be appropriate to commit money from tax revenues for this purpose. And the Town- ship budget is so tight this year, it does not have $1000 that has not already been ear-marked. Since the cutback in the daily Via service was ann- ounced late this summer, the passenger Association has been w a vigorous hut unsuccessful battle to get Transport minister Jean Luc Pepin to change his mind. Licenc for riding academy acceptable Members of Scugog Town- ship council feel a liquor licence being sought by a riding academy is accept- "able provided the academy does not hold 'public' Satur- day night -dances and the licenced lounge is an access- ory to the riding activities. Rolling Hills Academy on the Shirley Road south of Port Perry has applied for a dining lounge licence which will come in front of the Liquor Licencing Board at a hearing in Peterborough December 9. The Academy is in an agriculture zone, and council members agreed that zoning regulations would not be vio- lated as long as the dances were not "public" or pro- moted.
