Church member presents lovely stained window Seagrave United Church was filled to overflowing for the celebration of its 75th Anniversary on Sunday, September 27th, 1981. Two former ministers and many former members and friends were in attendance from far and near. A highlight of the service was the presentation of a beautiful Memorial Window by Mrs. Lillian McNeil in loving memory of her late husband, the Rev. E. McNeil, a former good shepherd and pastor of the Seagrave congregation. The pictorial stained glass window was that of 'The Good Shepherd'. This lasting memorial was dedi- cated by the Rev. L. Critch, a former minister of the Seagrave Church and a good friend of the McNeil family, assisted by Mr. Donald Darrell, brother-in-law of Mrs. McNeil, Following the dedication, the congregation sang the fitting Psalm, "The Lords My Shepherd". Another former minister, the Rev. Jack Roundell of Maynooth, took the Scripture readings from II Peter 1:3-11 and II Corinthians 8:1-15, as well as delivering the Pas- toral Prayer. Seagrave's Award Winning Junior Choir under the capable leadership of their organist and Choir Leader, Mrs. Joan Lee, rendered two delightful numbers: "Joyful Melody" and "Pass It On". The Senior Choir sang: 'You'll Never Walk Alone' and "Bless This House". Mrs. Fern Tobin ably assisted with the accompaniment. Two beautiful solos "I'll Walk With God" and "How Great Thou Art" were sung by Mr. Bert Hutcheon of Seagrave. The message for the service entitled "Called to Excellence" was delivered by Seagrave's present minister, the Rev. Arthur M. Rodgers, and was based on the text taken from II Peter 1:3 - "His Divine Power Has Granted To Us All Things That Pertain To Life and Godliness Through Know- ledge Of Him Who Called Us To His Own Glory And Excellence". The service closed with the singing of the hymn, "All The Way My Saviour Leads Me". Then the congregation proceeded to the church basement for a time of food and fellowship together. The cutting of a 76th Anniversary cake by Mrs. Myrtie Stone, who was a young girl when the church opened 75 years ago, was a highlight of the social hour that followed. A time of Christian fellowship was enjoyed by all. Several pictures were taken to remember this milestone in Seagrave United Church history. : In the face of strong pressure from medical, legal and social groups, Durham Region council last week voted to hire two family counsellors, one to work in Brock Township and the othér in Oshawa. : The two family counselling positions have been vacant for the past several months, and for a while it appeared as if tight money might mean the positions would not be filled. At the outset of last week's council meeting, Durham councillors heard a strong plea from Stan Mason, chairman of the Social Planning Advisory Group in Durham, who said the family counselling staff is very crucial, and these 'services should not be reduced or eliminated." PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., November 4, 1981 -- 7 Two family counsellors hired Mr. Mason said there is no other single service of this type in Durham Region. Over the past several weeks, Durham Region has received numerous letter in support of the Family Counselling services from doctors and lawyers. The Family Counselling Service appears to be headed for a $70,000 shortfall in its budget this year, because grants from the provincial government only amounted to nine per cent increase while the increase granted by Durham council is 12 per cent. However, following the meeting last week, Durham's commissioner of social services Doug Johns said this shortfall will be made up from funds ear- marked for general welfare. He said the general welfare will probably save in the neighbourhood of $150,000 in the 1981 budget.
