Gamblers forced into game By a strange series of events last week, the Green- bank Gamblers were declared champions of the Uxbridge Community Fast- ball League, and then a few days later had the title taken away by the league executive. This is apparently what happened. The Gamblers were leading the best of five series two games to one, and were enjoying momentum after back to back victories. About two hours before game time, the Gamblers were notified by Uxbridge, that the game was cancelled due to wet grounds. As there had been no rain in the area that day, the Greenbank executive immediately lodged a protest. The Gamblers arrived at the park for the game with a large number of their fans * anxious to see if the team could wrap the series up. But nobody from the Uxbridge team made an appearance. The umpires waited for nearly half an * hour, then ordered the Gamblers to take to the field. One pitch was thrown and the umpires declared Green- bank winners of the game by default, and the series. However, the celebrations were short-lived, as the league executive held a meeting Monday (October 12) in Uxbridge, and for some reason the decision of the umpires was reversed, and the series will continue. It seems that the executive didn't want the season to come to an end in this - fashion on a defaulted game. So, Uxbridge forfeited their home game, and the next match in this weird series will be held this Friday evening at 8:00 p.m. at the Joe Fowler Park in Port Perry. Needless to say, the Gamblers will be going all out to win this match and claim the championship for the second time in a week. If Uxbridge should happen to win this game in Port Perry, the fifth and deciding game will be held at the Gamblers home diamond in Greenbank on Sunday afternoon with game time at 2:00 p.m. Goalies shine in tight game Beacocks -1 Brians-0 The first game of the after- noon saw Brians goaltender, Wayne Cox and his counter- part Rick McClean both give outstanding performances between the pipes. Both teams had numerous good scoring chances in a game that was fast and clean. Rick McClean recorded his second shutout in many starts. Emmerson - 2 Laroque - 2 In a tightly played game, both teams had a hard time staying out of the penalty box. Laroque's first goal was scored while they were shorthanded. Larry Page and .Mike Mole made good passes around the Emmerson defence to get a breakaway with Page finishing off the play. ~ Newly acquired Rick Collins tied the game for Emmersons near the end of the first period with- Wayne Slute assisting. Less than 6 minutes later Kevin Martens gave Laroque the lead again on an unassisted goal. With 2:30 left in the game, Rick Collins converted a Doug Mappin pass to salvage a tie for Emmerson. C&B-6 Utica -0 The referees had their hands full again as both teams seemed to be playing most of this game in the penalty box. The only goal of the first two periods came early in the game from Bruce Woodrow. * Laval Poulin a rookie net- minder for Utica, had a hard time stopping the C&B shooters in the third frame » as they opened up and scored ? five unaswered goals. Rob Evans led the way with 1 goal and 2 assists. Mark Lee and Bill Bridge tallied with 1 goal and 1 assist each. Single goals went to Mike Mitchell and Ken Fraser. Keith Fraser recorded the shutout.
