The present facility is literally falling apart. The floors, which slope badly in places, have holes in them, The workshop area floods every time there is a good rain storm, and the wooden platform in front of the building must be replaced. Mr. Kendry says operating on short term leases is no incentive for him to sink money into major repairs or maintenance work. And he says the present facility is too small for operation of a marina capable of handling all kinds of repairs to boats and engines. If the council wants a marina in Port Perry, "then something has to be done, soon," he said. Several municipal councils over the years have wrestled with the problem of the marina in the present location. There is no question that it breaks up the stretch of parkland from Palmer to Birdseye Park, but at the same time it is very convenient to the downtown business section of Port Perry. "The building's condition has been labelled an "eyesore" by local residents, and the fact that is owned by the Township is an embarrassment to some members of the present and Community Care needs volunteers Scugog Community Care needs some special men and women to volunteer for its community mental health program. Anyone aged 18 and over who is willing to take a six session training course (Tuesday or Thursday evenings beginning October 1st) is invited to contact the Community Care office at 208 North Street. Volunteers in the program work on a one to one basis with people who are experiencing difficulty coping with stressful situations. The help the volunteer gives is basically life skills training - master- ing some of the things that we all assume everyone can do. Once a person can experience success, stress level goes down. Please call 985-8461 and ask for Elizabeth Fulford, co-ordinator of the program. You can make a difference in a person's life. Mayor concerned From page 1 Township and the reply was no. Mr. Twelvetrees told the Mayor the decision to start looking for a new site would be up to the Regional council. He said it is not very economical for Durham to operate small dumps, and suggested that a transfer station might be set for the convenience of Scugog residents, with a garbage contractors hauling trash elsewhere. : Ontario NOTICE OF PUBLIC MEETING TAKE NOTICE THAT a Public Meeting of The Liquor Licence Board of Ontario will be held at the ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION, 217 MURRAY STREET, PETER- BOROUGH, ONTARIO on WED- NESDAY, OCTOBER 14th, 1981, at the hour of 10:00 o'clock in -- the forenoon, at which time the Board will hear applications for new licences in accordance with The Liquor Licence Act, 1975 and Regulations thereunder. M5E 1A4 MINISTRY OF CONSUMER AND COMMERCIAL RELATIONS THE LIQUOR LICENCE ACT, 1975 FHHB1577 At the present rate, it is expected the dump in Scugog will be filled in the next six or seven years. Since it is the only dump in the Region open on Saturday afternoons commercial collectors from Oshawa and Whitby have been dumping trash here and this prompted the local council to seek the noon hour closing. At the meeting last week, Mr. Twelvetrees assured the mayor the Scugog dump issue will be studied next spring when the Region carries out the annual waste management survey of all . dumps operated by Durham. Mayor Taylor and members of Scugog council are concerned that when the dump here is filled, the cost of getting rid of garbage for Township residents will increase substantially if it has to be trucked to a site several miles away. the past councils. Mindful of the 'loss of parkland" hue and cry that went up a couple of years ago when plans for the new library were on the board, Scugog council is treating the marina issue very cautiously. A couple of years ago, council was ready to move the Works department garage (which sits just west of the present marina building) but that plan fell through when" it became financially impossible to build a new works depot. Mr. Kendry says that if the works department is moved at some time in the future, the garage could be used for a marina. His plan for a marina at the new boat launching facility calls for a building 60 by 40, close to the water and just north of the launch area. He says such a large building is essential to set up a workshop equipped with marine railroad so that complete structural repairs can be done on boats up to 35 feet long. Being able to do complete structural and mechanical repairs on large boats is necessary to make the marina financially viable, said Mr. Kendry. If a new facility was built, he believes there should be a boat launching and car parking fee charged any non- resident of the Township. Mr. Kendry said that to start from scratch and build a properly equipped marina facility could cost as much as $250,000. He said he is prepared to discuss any kind of proposal fully with the council. While he is happy to get a new three year lease for the location he has now, he believes a long term commitment is the only way Port Perry will get a first class marina operation. Police Auction More than 200 bicycles and an assortment of other unclaimed articles including iewellery. stereo equipo- ment and even a boat went up for public auction at Durham Police headquarters buildirig in Oshawa on Saturday. Even though winter is coming on, the 'bidding for the bicycles was brisk and a large crowd was on hand looking for bargains.
