Fall - an excellent time to plant lawns Fall is an excellent time to . plant a new lawn or to rebuild a worn out lawn, says Bob Fleming, Horticulturist, Horticultural Research Institute of Ontario, Vineland. "Turf grasses have a new lease on life when cooler fall weather arrives," he says. "It's a good time to start a new growth." ~ To plant a fall lawn, prepare the soil as you normally prepare your garden, cultivating to a depth of 10 centimetres (four inches). - Add a fertilizer low in nitrogen and high in phos- phorus. Mr. Fleming recommends 5-20-20 to Keep nitrogen low, use you don't want to stimulate top growth just before winter, he says. Instead, you want to esta- blish a good root system. Before sowing, rake, level and roll the soil, then sow a high quality grass mixture containing Kentucky blue grasses and some creeping red fescue. When buying seed, always get good quality seed, warns Mr. Fleming. A bargain- priced seed often turns out to be no bargain at all when the grass comes up. Once the lawn is planted, keep the ground uniformly moist until germination is complete and there is a green haze over the seeded area. Area lady would like to start association Linda Murray, of Victoria Corners, is looking at the possibility of starting a scoliosis association in this area. The principal aim of this group would be to inform people of the condition as well as act as a support to family and patients. A victim of scoliosis (curvature of the spine) her- self, Miss Murray is looking for support in this area. Although the group may be entitled as an Oshawa Chapter; the present idea is to incorporate the Port Perry, Uxbridge, Whitby 'and Oshawa areas and have 'the meetings in each of the Jesus is Coming Soon! towns once a month in order to accomodate everyone in the surrounding areas. Anyone interested in per- haps forming an association and becoming a member is asked to call Linda at 668-0756 (Monday - Friday) or 852-6519 (Weekends). A decision on forming such an organization will depend on the amount of response from the areas. Agricrew program draws to a finish After eight busy, work-. filled weeks, the Agricrew '81 Program has drawn to a close. In Ontario County, ten farmers were able to find work for the crew. The most popular jobs included hoeing, pruning, haying, fencing and painting, but they also found themselves helping to shear sheep and to train cattle to lead on a halter. Agricrew has been a definite success in Ontario County and now seems to be firmly established as a program which benefits all involved. Crew members have been able to see and work in a variety of farm situations FRIDAY SATURDAY SUNDAY SEPT.11-12-13,1981 SATURDAY SEPT.12 SUNDAY, SEPT. 13 and have gained experience from this exposure. They have also learned more about cooperation and "team effort' while having fun working together as a group. For the farmers, the experience has also been beneficial. Those that have used an Agricrew have been pleased with the work done and have discovered that Agricrew is a very good way to obtain help during the summer months. : The Agricrew Program has been quite a success this summer, and the cooper- ation of all involved has been greatly appreciated.
