Av x BAPE 9 AE AT 14 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., August 19, 1981 Girls win Canadian canoe cha Heather McDougall and Paula Haugen of Port Perry are the Canadian Junior Girls Marathon Canoe Champions for 1981. The two girls paddled their way to victory over four other teams in their division at the national finals held August 1st.in Saskatoon. Racing over a 16 mile course on the South Saskat- chewan River, Paula and Heather covered the distance in two hours, 41 minutes, 16 seconds, a remarkable 12 minutes ahead of the second place, also from Ontario. There were five teams in the Junior Girls (18 and under) tinal, three from Ontario and one from British Columbia and Alberta. Capturing first place in the national final is the highlight of a very successful summer of marathon racing for Paula and Heather who had three first and three second place finishes. They set a couple of course records, including the one in their Lindsay routs Greenbank in by Rodd Foster Two hours before game time last Tuesday night, the Port Perry diamond was under water and appeared to be unplayable. ; However the Greenbank players and Port Perry Soft- - ball officials worked dili- gently at removing the water and by 8:30 p.m. the game went ahead as scheduled. As far as the Greenbank team was concerned the final result was disap- pointing. This time around the big bats of the Lindsay Royals" were not to be denied. They scored two runs in the second inning and three more in the third to take a commanding 5-0 lead. After adding a single run in the sixth inning they -wrapped things up in the top of the ninth by scoring 4 more runs off Elmer Spence who had relieved Ken Irvine in the ninth. Lindsay finished the game as convincing 10-0 Lack of Hits Greenbank time and again could not come up with the key hit that would have put them back in the game. They had a total of nine hits including two lead off triples, but could not push any runs over the plate. Greenbank left a total of 10 series final men on base while Lindsay left only four which just about sums up the game. Jeff Hutton pitched a five game for Lindsay with relief help from Don Timms in the 8th and 9th innings. John Lucas led the Lind- say attack with three hits with Rick Dainard, Keith Tamblyn and Jeff Hutton each having a pair. Don Beaton gamblers at the plate with. two hits while Ken Irvine, Neil Rodd, Andy Doble, Greg Rodd, Jay Williams and Don Phinney each had a hit: ~~ This was the first appear- ance of a Greenbank team in .0.A.S.A. competition in 24 years, the last time being in 1957 when they were entered in Inter "C"- playdowns. While they were sorry to disappoint the big crowd that gathered for the third game they nonetheless played excellent ball to push a strong Lindsay team to a third and final game. Now it is back to league playoffs for Greenbank and their first round opponents will be the Hustling Sunder- land Harvesters. The task now is for Greenbank to forget their one bad game (which every team has on occasion) and get back to playing the solid brand of ball they have been showing for the past two months. Irvine boots four as team wins 10-0 by Doug Bache In a game completely dominated by Sipco'the final score was 10 to 2. It must be noted that Chrysler could field only 9 players in the first half and 10 in the second. Goal scorers for Sipco were David Irvine with 4, - each. Terry Bache, Michael Toye and David Schwan with 2 Other strong performers were--goalie Craig McTavish, Jayson Callan and Robert McConnell. The race over the course on the South Saskatchewan River was held under good weather conditions, however at times the paddlers were working against the river current which was fairly strong. : It is not likely the team will be competing further this season as Paula had an "appendix operation a couple of days after winning the national final. However, they will be looking for more victories next year. Also at the national in Saskatoon, the boys 18 and ~~ under team of Kevin Haugen from Port Perry and Darren Desautel of Seagrave placed sixth in their class with a time of 2:42:47 over an 18 mile course. The winning team in that division was from Saskat- chewan and turned in a time of 2:28:47. Darren and Kevin were just a couple of minutes behind the 5th and 4th place finishers. They also have had a very successful racing season this summer, winning five times, along with three seconds and "one third.
