VIipEYShS Big beef buffet in Arena starts many exciting events at Port Perry Just when summer seems to be rolling nicely along, it's time once again to start thinking about fall fairs. The annual Port Perry Fair is only about three weeks away, and the three day event to be held Sept- ember 5, 6 and 7. promises as always to have something of interest for everyone. Joe Baxter, president of the Port Perry Agricultural Society which stages the Fair each year, told the Star last week that just about everything is in place for the 1981 edition. Mr. Baxter is keeping his fingers crossed that the weatherman will be a little more co-operative than last year when rain put a damper on events during the three days. been upgraded to a class B event, which means among other things, more prize money available for exhibits and displays. Last year, about $14,000 was awarded in prize money. Along with the many events relating to agricul- ture, the Fair this year will feature the 2nd annual Baby Show which proved so 'popular last year. There are' classes for boys, girls and twins up to one year of age. Some of the other crowd pleasing events include the Pet Show, heavy horse pull, a tug-of-war championship, horse racing with para- mutual betting, displays of riding - skills, the midway, and of course the Holstein Show. ~ The Holstein Show at Port Perry has earned a rep- utation over the years which attracts entries from the very best dairy herds in Ontario. And in recent times, the Show has taken on a bit of an international flavour with buyers from abroad present to get a look at the prime Holstein cattle. There will also be beef competitions for various breeds such as Charolais, Simmental and Herefords, and judging of coloured" 'dairy cattle like Guernseys Will operate 4 nursery schools . ; in Scugog The Durham Region Family YMCA will be opera- ting 4 nursery schools in Scugog this fall. Mornings, Monday to Thursday are for two and a half to five year olds at the Port Perry United Church. The afternoon four's class will be at the Town Hall on Tuesdays and: Thursdays and at the United Church Mondays to Fridays' A new nursery school will be opening this year at the Prince Albert Hall on Tues- day and Thursday mornings for two and a half to 5 year olds. - Special registration forms are available now by calling the Y office at 985-2824. The Port Perry Fair, 'annual Fair which traditionally has been held over the Labour Day Weekend, has a long history which attracts visitors and exhibitors from near and far.
