J i ae ITER AN AY by Brian Mark - The Scugog Youth Soccer Club held its 2nd annual Western Weekend Soccer Tournament last Saturday and Sunday. Teams from Whitby, - Uxbridge, New- market, Pickering Town, Pickering Village and, of course, Scugog brought a total of over 200 kids to compete in the Squirt and Atom age groups. Saturday's elimination . rounds saw all of the Scugog teams knocked out but did they ever go down trying. The Canadian Tire team, coached by Janet Deans, even though beating Whitby 3-2 in the last game, were eliminated on their goals against tally. The other squirt team, Irvine Con- struction, coached by young Alf Huggins, were beaten in both their games by only 1-0 and tried their hardest. "The Kinsmen: Atom team could have won their first game which was a real cracker-jack. They let in an easy goal which they should have countered several times but the oppositjon's net lead a charmed life." Give them credit though, in the second half; they only let in one goal and even then had a few good shots on the Whitby goal in the final minutes. The Whitby team took the Atom championship by beat- ing Pickering Village 3-0 in the final. Mayor Jerry Taylor handed out the team and individual trophies to all the winners and runners-up. MVP plaques donated by DO-NOS were handed out as were soccer balls donated by Canadian Tire, Sportsland and All-Canadian Sports, Mayor Taylor remarked on the community's pride in - how this fast growing sport is being handled in Port Perry and District and touched on the efficient running of this tournament in the Scugog Club's excellent facilities. The Scouts weré also thanked for running a first class canteen and the St. John's Ambulance people for their presence. A motor- home lent to the club by the Trailer Place, provided exotic changing rooms and hiding places for the hard- pressed referees. Jrs. advance to Ont. finals by Don McBeth The Port Perry Mother's Pizza Juniors advanced to the all Ontario 0.A.S.A. finals with a 6-5 victory over Claremont last Sunday evening. . The win gave Port Perry the best of the three semis two games to one. \ Excellent defensive plays in the field and strong pitch- ing by Tim Thompson paved the way for the victory. Thompson fanned ten oposition batters, while giving up just two walks. The win did not come easy for Port Perry as Claremont continued to threaten right up to the final out in the ninth inning. Claremont had squared the series at one game each with a convincing 15-8 win over Port Perry last Thursday evening after Port won the opener 4-2. Again in this game Ken Irvine went against the Lindsay pitching duo of Don Timms and Jack Snell and while Irvine held Lindsay to . two runs his teammates victorious winning the Squirts Championship.
