2 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., August 5, 198) Riders fight to save VIA service (From page 1) operate at a profit or at least break even basis. The one way fare from Myrtle Station south of Port Perry where Scugog users catch the train, is $4 to Union in Toronto or $6 for a same day return ticket. The reference to the most '"'profitable" passenger service in the country stems from figures which show that in 1974 the per passenger subsidy from -the govern- ment amounted to $2.59. Mr. Parkes estimates that this has increased in 1981 to something around $6, still far lower than the per passenger subsidy for other lines. Toronto-Havelock pass- enger group is working with similar groups who use VIA service to Stouffville and Barrie, and last Thursday they held a demonstration at Petitions Petitions against the rail cuts are being circulated by Mr. Parkes and have been made available to the public" for their signature at the Port Perry Star office. Union Station to generate publicity for their cause. Several federal and provin- cial' politicians who represent ridings affected by the service cuts are also working on the government to reverse the decisions. When the announcements were first made last week, it was thought the Toronto- Havelock line would go out of service late this fall, but apparently this'will not take affect until the middle of next summer. -- In the meantime, the Association will be holding strategy sessions and likely public meetings to generate support for the cause. Mr. Parkes said that one option - the group wants examined is the possibility of a GO transit train using the line if the VIA decision holds. "Maybe it's too simplistic, but if VIA can run a train over the lines each day, GO should be able to do the same thing," he said. If the struggle to save the service in one form or another does prove fruitless, Mr. Parkes is not certain just how he will get to work each day. "My wife says that maybe I should retire, and I might give it some thought. But I want to be able to make that decision on my own, and not have VIA or the government force me into it." The train makes 14 stops between Havelock and Toronto, including Peter- borough, Burketon, Myrtle, " Dagmar, Claremont, Locust Hill and Agincourt. Canadian Pacific operated the line until 1979-80 when it was taken over by VIA Rail. (Turn to page 3) There is an art group in Port Perry that is making its name known throughout the area.
