The Club, as it is known, has had numerous owners over the past few years, and at times it had a reputation as a rowdy spot. But manager Len Clement is confident he can restore the Club's reputation, and turn the Saturday night dances into fun times for what he calls "a more mature type of crowd." The newest owners are two businessmen from the Oshawa area who bought the Club three months ago, and to be the manager. He admits that when he first saw the building, he had more than just a few mis- givings about its generally run-down condition. But Len, who has his own renovation and restoration business, went to work and' first gave the Club a thorough cleaning from top to bottom. He then replaced all the fire doors, shored up some sagging beams in the ceiling, added a coat of fresh paint, sprayed some white stucco on the ceiling, and bought all new tables and chairs for a seating capacity of 675 people. By the time he was finished the renovations and buying the new equipment and furnishings, Len says about $35,000 had been spent on the building. "We are aiming to attract a more mature crowd of people," he told the Star in an interview last week. "We think we can give them a good time, a relaxed evening of dancing and listening to easy, middle of the road music," he said. There will not be any "heavy metal" type groups booked into the Club, and while he doesn't come right out and say it, Len strongly hints that any rowdies look- ing for trouble won't. be made welcome. The security 'staff and bar- tenders will see to that. To attract the kinds of crowds who are interested in a good time rather than a rough time, Len has booked such groups as Bill Johnson and Sweet Country, who will be there this Saturday evening August 1. The Log Cabin Boys is another group which leans to the country sounds, while Bev Smith and Orchestra ~ Club Annrene hopes to change its image . from Oshawa are a dance 'band with sounds from the contemporary back through 1950's, 40's nd 30s. Actually, the Club held its first dance under the new ownership two weeks ago, and Len admits that atten- dance was less that what he hoped for. However, there were at least two other dances going on in the area that same evening which hurt, and Len believes it is going to take time for people to realize the Club has re- opened and is catering to a middle of the road crowd. If the operation of the Club runs according to plan, Len says the Saturday night dances will continue through the fall and winter months. And during the summer, there will be teen dances to TALE v4 AY taped music each Wednes- day evening from 8:00 to 11:00 with roller skating thrown in. But it is the Saturday night dances which are crucial to the Club's success as far as Len is concerned. He is confident that with the right kind of music and the right kind of attitude and manage- ment, the right kind of crowd will restore the Club's repu- tation and turn it into a popular spot where a couple or group of people can go for an evening of good times and not have to worry about getting caught in the middle of a punch-up. fos © } comms} mmm} e-- ABUNDANT LIFE FELLOWSHIP OSHAWA ROAD ( 1 Mile South of Raglan) UNDENOMINATIONAL CHARISMATIC SERVICES SUNDAY:11AM.&6P.M.
