School managed to. have a fine picnic last week. The "Head" U.C.W. met on Wednesday evening at the home of Mrs. Marion Carter 15 ladies were present in- cluding Mrs. Pat Fulcher's " mother as a guest. Several members were absent due to the holiday time. Doreen Adam's group was in charge. We missed Doreen's leader- ship as she has been in Spite) a couple of weeks a troublesome virus. The theme of the program was Canada Day and began with the hymn "Our loved Dominion bless." Marilyn Heayn read scripture from 11 Corinthians when Paul described some of the things that had happened to him in his country. Betty Reader read the lesson "God's Country' and offered a prayer for our country. Reta Reader read a story from the Observer describing the controversy over the choice of a professor outside of Canada for Emmanuel College. The Roll Call required us to suggest something that native people or immigrants had contributed to Canadian culture. Appreciation correspon- dence was received from: the 3 daughters of the late Mrs. Elizabeth Day and an earlier card from Mrs. Mabel Strong. 'We were reminded from the minutes that a couple of the members had purchased material and fashioned long white aprons and caps to be worn by members when serving refreshments at pioneer activities. Last instructions were given for the Strawberry Supper this Wednesday at the community hall. Tickets had been ordered early. Some cancellations have been reported but were immediately refilled. Then a committee was called for the Turkey , Supper, Wednesday, Sept. 23 . Two films were shown by Janis Richardson. The first was a description of egg decorating by Ukranian people. The second was. a comic picture, '"Who are we?" and referred to life in Canada. During the preparation of lunch, Reta Reader con- ducted a contest on Canadian currency, coins and bills, requiring members to write down tHe person represented on one side and the emblem or picture on the other. Beryl Pearce was the winner and proved she scans the great amount of money that presently passes through her hands at auction sales. Jan Gerrow did a very fine job of conducting the meet- ing in the absence of the president Alva Thompson who has now returned to her _ home after a two week vaca- tion. This coming Saturday is the day the Women's Insti- tute will pick up your various donations for the auction on the following Saturday. Grace Love's mother, Mrs. Nellie Miller is much better and has returned to the Villa. We can't tell you how you will get your local paper this week as there is. no rural delivery due to the strike. . At the Island church on Sunday the children -cer- tainly were missed and therefore their parents too. It was noted that only two young mothers brought their little ones along. Island vacation seems to start earlier each year, We have only three Sundays left in July and then a complete vacation in the church for the whole month of August. So let us take advantage of the July Sundays to attend the service. For next Sunday Rev. Linstead has announced a favourite hymn. In his sermon taken from Luke 5, he reminded us how Jesus had exhorted the fishermen who were tired, discouraged and had given up hope to launch out into the deep and let down their nets. For us the message is that we must seek the deep things of God and avoid the shallows of spiritual pursuits. Three men who were building a great church were asked what the job meant to them. The first said he was follow- ing his chosen work of stone cutting. The second said it PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesd was a means for him to earn a living. The third felt he was building a cathedral where the work of God's kingdom would be carried on. Rev. Linstead paid tribute. to Terry Fox who has awakened in our hearts a feeling of hope. We welcome Mr. and Mrs. Steer to the "Head" com- munity as they. are now permanent residents in the former home of Mrs. Y, July 8, 1981 -- 1 Elizabeth Stichmann on Con. 6. We also welcome Mr. and Mrs. Pugh from Toronto who have taken over and restored to attractive beauty the aged house on the Island main road across from the "head" museum church.
