A highly respected and beloved citizen Mr. Roy H. Cornish, a former principal of Port Perry Elementary School for 35 years passed to his reward on Wednesday, June 17, after a seven month 'sojourn, first in Sunnybrook Medical Centre, Toronto, and later transferred to Port Perry Community Hospital, due to a tragic accident on the evening of November 21, 1980. The standards Roy set at the Port Perry Elementary School were praise worthy and challenging. Widely respected as principal and teacher he wielded a great influence over the students and staff, providing a warm interest in them after his retirement. He liked nothing better than a visit with former pupils. The influence ' of a teacher can never be: measured; it stretches into eternity. In 1953, on the occasion of Her majesty's Coronation, Roy received the Queen Elizabeth Medal for having made an outstanding contri- bution over an extended period to education in Port Perry as Principal and also for having contributed his services so generously to the welfare of the community. He received a second Medal July 1, 1967, on the occasion of the one hundredth Anni- versary of the Confederation of Canada - the Centennial Medal was conferred on "Roy Hooey Cornish Esquire in recognition of valuable service to the nation." Roy didn't send but "took his son to the rink and ball field" and coached and encouraged others in their sport. Of late years he became an avid curler and golfer to which many a senior competitor can aver. Born in Orono, Roy re- ceived his early education in his hometown schools and graduated from Peter- borough Normal School. He married Margaret Allin of Orono in 1935. For the past 46 years they have lived in Port Perry. Roy was a lover of the out-of-doors, enjoying his vegetable garden and beauti- ful flowers, and sharing with friends and neighbours from his bountiful supply. Roy was a person of deep perceptions and simple . tastes. He had a lifetime full of productive, memorable hours. Of late years Roy and Margaret . found time to travel, visiting many countries and enjoying the winter months in Florida. Our association with friend Roy has been a pleasant one - we'll cherish happy thoughts when looking back over the years, visiting with Roy on numberous occasions. A friend tried and true- he will be greatly missed but fondly remembered. We bid fare- well to Roy Hooey Cornish and feel it was good to have known him. The world is the poorer because of his passing, but richer because he was part of it. As we think of him the following lines come to mind:- Inventory-by William Howey I count folks worth by their will to serve, And their power to answer the call; Who deepen the joys of many hearts - And bring new joys to all; By the number of friends who know them true; Who are true to them in turn- By the worth of interests they make their own - By all riches that cannot burn. He leaves to mourn, his devoted wife Margaret Allin, son William Allin and wife Norma, grandchildren Clair, Gretchen and Shawna, brother James Baxter of Oshawa, sisters Marion Hart, Oshawa, and Phyllis Sawyer of New Brunswick. He was predeceased by. a brother William, in May, 1980, of Bowmanville. Funeral service was held at the Port Perry United Church. Rev. Robert Brawn offered a message of comfort to the bereaved. Organist Glen Taylor provided the- music. Pall bearers were former pupils and brother Masons - Stanley Glass, Ted Griffen, Stewart Lane, Robert Storry, Gordon Carnegie and James Baird. The Masonic Service on Thursday evening - so well attended testified to the high regard in which brother Ro was held.
