The Camporee was made up of 58 patrols (361 Scouts) who came from Oshawa the host district, as well as Detroit, Barrie, Markham, Richmond Hill, Thornhill, and Scugog. The Scugog Scouts were Stephen Akkerman and Shawn Umphrey of Black- stock; Steven Bray, Ritchie DeJeet, Mathew MacMillan and Todd Soomre of Port Perry. The Scouts were scored on their camping and scouting skills, which in- Scugog Scouts place second at Camporee cluded canoeing, orienteer- ing, trail signs, pioneering and fire lighting. . The Scugog Scouts finished in second place overall with a point score of 4,592 out of a possible 5,000. Only 15 points separated them from the overall winners. The Camporee was used as a final preparation camp for most patrols as about 60 percent of the patrols at the camporee will be going to the Canadian Jamboree CJ'81. The above Scouts will be leaving Port Perry for Kananaskis Country, Alberta on June 27 for a two week period. At the present time over 20,000 Scouts are registered to take part in the Jamboree. M.P. Al Lawrence heads delegation to the Philippines Allan Lawrence, M.P. for Durham-Northumberland, acting head of the Canadian branch of the Inter-Parlia- mentary Union, was one of five Canadian parliamen- tarians to attend the spring meeting of I.P.U. at Manilla, in the Phillippines, during the easter recess of the House of Commons. ~ The LP.U. is the oldest international parliamentary organization in the western world. Founded in 1889, it predates both the United Nations and its predecessor, the League of Nations. Some 94 nations are represented at its meetings, and Mr. Lawrence is one of two Canadian members on the International Council. He was away for two weeks, and at the meeting had a leading role in discus- sions of various economic, social and human rights issues. As well, he was chief Canadian spokesman on the committee dealing with politics, international - security, and disarament. The main value of these meetings are the various discussion groups and seminars in which elected parliamentarians voice their own views, instead of the policies of their govern- ments," Mr. Lawrence stated. "For an M.P. it is much more valuable to hear the personal opinions of elected officials from other countries, rather than simply the official positions taken by the governments they represent," he added. "Certainly if we were all able to get to know one another in this fashion, there would be much less interna- tional conflict and argument and considerably better understanding between nations." Farm safety poster winners announced The annual Farm and Home Safety Poster Com- petition, sponsored by the Ontario County Farm Safety Association, was a most successful project again this year. . The competition was open to rural school pupils in grades 5 to 8 in the former Ontario County area. Eight townships. wére represented, with a total of 409 posters entered in the competition. The posters were well pre- pared, indicating a good deal of thought and painstaking work on the part of the pupils involved. Mrs. Glen Owen, Art Teacher, Uxbridge, did a splendid job of judging the competition, and .the teachers are to be congra- tulated for encouraging the boys and girls to enter this worthwhile safety project. The championship winners of the competition, by township, are as follows: Reach - Donna Lynn Nixon - Prince Albert Public School, Prince Albert; Scugog - Lisa Hamilton- Prince Albert Public School, Prince Albert; Uxbridge - Nick Threndyle - Goodwood Public School, Goodwood; Scott - Stacey Mikuse - Scott Central Public School, Sand- ford; Brock - Michael Mazza - Sunderland Public School, Sunderland; Thorah - Shelley Davis - Beaverton Public School, Beaverton; Mara - Lorraine Manners - Uptergrove Public School, Uptergrove; 'Rama - Tammy Coe - Rama Central Public School, Washago SCUGOG ISLAND HEAD U.C.W.
