Dyke, Kawartha Lakes Fish Technician Anglers contacted by Ministry of Natural" Resources field staff, in the Kawartha Lakes area, on opening weekend indicated 451 yellow pickerel were kept by the 1,079 fishermen interviewed: A considerable number of small pickerel were also reported returned to the water. The average Catch was less than a pound but pickerel up to five pounds were caught. The larger fish were generally taken in the lake areas near shoals and gravel bars. Good catches of perch were also seen at many locations with large-sized perch showing a consider- able increase over past years. 'June 6th" this year, Conservation Officers indicated that violations of the fishery regulations were minimal with the most frequent infraction being anglers using more than one fishing line. Anglers are reminded that muskellunge - season does not -open until and smallmouth and largemouth bass open on June 27th. PROPOSED CHANGES IN 1982 FISHING REGULATIONS Several changes have been proposed in the fishing regulations for the Kawartha Lakes in Division 6, for implementation in the spring of 1982. "An information brochure and further details on these changes can be obtained by contacting the Lindsay District office of the Ministry of Natural Resources, 322 Kent Street West, Lindsay, Ontario, K9V 4T7, telephone 705-324-6121. PICKEREL EGGS CATCHON Ministry of Natural Resources divers found considerably more yellow pickerel eggs adhered to rocks at two .recently im- proved spawning areas. The divers were checking for spawning pickerel and eggs at Rosedale and Coboconk. Spawning areas of these two locations were improved last winter by the addition of "'preferred-size" rock. The divers found more eggs on the introduced "preferred- size" rocks than on the natural material on adjacent area. Improved pickerel angling in Balsam and Cameron Lakes show up as additional fish in the anglers' catch in three or four years time. AERIAL SPRAYING CANCELLED The aerial. spraying project scheduled to take place this May at Balsam Lake Park, has been cancelled. Inspection by a Ministry of Natural Resources staff member and an insect specialist . from the Great Lakes Forest Research Centre revealed that popula- tions of spruce budworm had not developed as expected. It has not been ascertained what caused the lowered populations.
