Proficiency and athletics awards were won by Kevin Hobbs for English; David Kemp for industrial arts, and Rob Burnett and Grant Perry were co- winners as boy athlete of the year. Scugog Island by Mrs. Earl Reader We regret the mistaken date last week for the Island Sunday School picnic. Please note correction for this Thursday, June 26 at 1:30 p.m. as the pool opens at 2 p.m. It is at Poplar Park and entrance will be paid by the Sunday School. If anyone does not have a ride, please contact Mrs. Cawker or any of the other teachers. Don't forget the Reception for Mrs. Edna Beckett on Tuesday evening to wish her well upon her teaching retirement. As we noted at the Sunday Church sevice, Mrs. Eliza Fralick had been able to cut a lovely bouquet of peonies in spite of her bruised fingers. Many children and parents forgot there were two more weeks of Sunday School. But a good number of the choir were keeping in practice and especially so with the con- cert, being repeated at Raglan tonight (Wednesday) Rev. Linstead's story for the children originated in Russia before the revolution at a time when there were thousands of poor people. It was about a boy who had no schooling or the necessities of life, so had nothing to lose when he left at 10 years of age and wandered around Russia for two years before he returned. He had heard impressive stories of U.S. and after more struggles and time was able to reach the land of his dreams. At 25 years of age he started school with much courage and determination. By the time he was 50 he was teaching in a college. By this story our children were persuaded to learn and progress in knowledge even if it is the end of the school year and time for vacation and change. During the time of announcements, Mr. Maur- ice Fralick told of his week- end at Elgin House at the Mens Conference, sponsored by the London Presbytery. Next year it will be spon- sored by Oshawa Presbytery and within the next three weeks, they will be accepting applications for anyone who would like to attend. For further information please contact Maurice. Many people, particularly around the foot of the Island will remember Mrs. Clara Dowson's brother John Hardy who left the Island 31 years ago to seek his fortunes in Alberta. He is presently living with his wife and two children at Breton, Alberta. It is 15 years since he was back, but this year he _ had a strong desire to see family and friends again, so flew this way and again saw a green Scugog for the first time since he had left. During his nine-day stay he was kept pretty busy with catching up on friendships and viewing the many changes on the Island and surrounding area. Among some of the visiting relatives were cousins from Port Elgin. The ladies of the Women's Institute are planning their annual Auction Sale at the Island Hall in July. We realize people make many changes in their homes in a year and children grow up, thus leaving a surplus of -unneeded toys, furniture, dishes, crafts, accessories, and notions, but it is useful to someone else. Now you will be able to dispose of it and do a service to your Community by putting it out on July 12 for a free pick up. Alan and Irene Carter were pleased "to attend the Graduation exercises at York University where their son Ross was in attendance for the last year after work- ing for General Motors in Woodstock for some time. For the time being Ross has returned to Woodstock where he had requested a leave of absence. Congratulations to Beth Wilson from the Island "Head" who received her Agricultural Diploma from Guelph University.
