Most of the detailed inquiries regarding water bill histories come from businesses or the owners of rental properties who need a yearly statement for income tax purposes and for some reason or another have lost or neglected to keep their monthly receipts. Other detailed requests come from lawyers acting in property transactions who want to"know if the water bill 'is in arrears. Lawyers are already being charged the $5 fee for this information. But the finance depart- ment spokesman stressed that customers will never be charged any fee for routine phone inquiries concerning their water bills. ~ The recommendation needs the support of council this week before it can be brought into force.
