LRA Militia leader wants Region to give employees paid time off The commanding officer of: the Ontario Reserve Regiment in Oshawa has requested that Durham Region employees in the reserve be granted two weeks off each year with pay to take part in special courses and annual trdining. The request comes from 'Lieutenant Colonel L.P. Morin, who notes in a letter to Durham countil that the and provincial governments permit their 'employees time off with pay for activity in the military reserve. The matter is expected to be dealt with by the full council April 1, as both the management committee of council and Durham's personnel department have urged that the request from the regiment be denied. Terry Stevens, Durham's commissioner of personnel, says in a report to council that while military service - training is worthy, there are other worthy causes such as working with the handi- capped or on community projects, and time off with pay for these is not permitted Mr. Stevens says that the federal government does allow employees time off with pay for military reserve work, but argues that Council ponders gun laws > Durham Region council - has been asked to endorse a resolution urging tougher penalties for anyone using a firearm during a crime, and for a mandatory death sentence for anyone who kills a police officer in the course of a crime. The request from Hamilton - Wentworth Regional council says that a minimum sentence of 20 years in jail should be imposed on anyone using a firearm in a criminal act, and that -killing a police officer should carry a mandatory death penalty with no appeal to the federal cabinet. The resolution was first dealt with by Durham council earlier this spring, but members decided to refer the resolution to the Durham Police commission for a recommendation. The Police Commission has agreed that the Hamilton resolution get unanimous approval, and Durham council's management committee is urging the full Durham council to do the same.
