70 projects entered in Science Fair This year marked the 4th Annual Port Perry High School Science Fair and it turned out to be the biggest yet. . Approximately 70 projects ~~ were'entered'in the Fair by * over 100 Grade 9 and 10 students. Many projects demonstrated well thought- out -techniques of Scientific investigation, with a number of very original experiments being attempted. : The ten top projects from this year's Fair will be entered in 'the Durham Regional Science Fair - April 9 and 10, The Regional Fair will be held in Port Perry this year at the Port Perry High School. Winners in the Biological Science category were: 1st - Marina Brock, Susan Labanovich - "Biorythm". 2nd - Dino Sergnese, Tony Giannini - "Hydroponics." 3rd - Harry Bolton - "Effects of Vitamins on Plants." Honorable Mention: Linda Hamer, Tracey Hoare - 'Bayer or Bark,' Don Clodd & David Loughlin - "Potash" and Heather Murray, Sandy Huggins and Judy Brinkman - "Blood Pressure." Physical Science winners: 1st- - Iris Nimz - "Surface Tension." 2nd - Kelly West, Suzanne Holy - "Crystal symmetry." 3rd - Maria Schillings, Kathy Stokes - "Use of Solar Energy." Honorable Mention - Rob Page - "Batteries." Darry. Musselman, Greg Williams - "Acid Rain." Dean Stone, Harry Sillen . - "Acid Rain." Samantha Espley, Jackie Skelding - "Bouyancy." Science Fair (From page 9) Students will set up their displays April 8 and the fair. will open April 9 at 9:00 a.m. and run to 4:00 p.m. that day. On April 10, the hours will be --9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. An awards banquet and presentation will follow. Awards to be given include the Durham College Faculty Association physical and life sciences prizes, David Carroll Memorial Award for environmental science and various teachers' federa- tions awards. As well, four prize winners will go to the Canada-wide science fair to be held in May in Waterloo. All students who place first, second or third in both biological and physical science categories and in the four divisions (Grade 7, 8, intermediate and senior) will also receive a certificate and trophy to mark their achievements. This year, senior public schools will be limited to eight exhibits each and kin- dergarten to Grade 8 schools limited to six due to space limitations. Science fairs came to Canada from the United States in 1959. The first Canada-wide fair was held in 1962 in Ottawa with 45 exhibits. The first science fair in Durham was held in 1971 at McLaughlin Collegiate. Durham officials say their regional science fair is now recognized as one of the finest in the country by the Youth Science Foundation, the national organization that manages the national event and other extra- curriculum science activities. As in previous years the fair will be visited by a large number of public and secondary school students, and parents are also encouraged to attend. The awards presentations will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 10, 1981.
