March 11 marked the end of the 21-day circulation period for the new by-law, and Mr. Cuddie said the number of objections was actually slightly less than Township officials had expected. "We expected there might have been close to 150 objec- tions," said Mr. Cuddie in an interview last Friday. Although the circulation period for the by-law has ended, the Township will continue to accept formal objections over the next six to eight weeks, or even up to within a reasonable time of the Ontario Municipal Board hearings which are expected to get underway early this fall. Mr. Cuddie said that because of the scope impor- tance of the new compre- hensive zoning by-law, the Township council feels that as much leeway as possible should be given property owners 'who may wish to lodge a formal objection. Township officials had hoped they would be able to meet individually with each of the objectors, but that may not be possible as the by-law and outstanding objections ~~ must be forwarded to the Ontario Municipal Board by the end of May in order to qualify the Township for additional Seniors concerned about Centre The Port Perry Senior Citi- zens Club has expressed concern about the condition of Latcham Centre, and Scugog council agreed March 9 to look into the matter. A letter to council from Senior Citizens Club secre- tary Irene Philip states that light bulbs are not replaced, toilets are not working properly, lights are being left on overnight, and doors are left unlocked. Club members hold their regular meetings at Latcham Centre, and the building is used for numer- ous community and social functions. Latcham Centre is owned by the municipality, but it is Elect a Strong New - Voice on the Davis Team ROSS STEVENSON for DURHAM-YORK ROSS STEVENSON Durham-York the only community hall in the Township which does not have an appointed board responsible for its operation. After discussing the letter March 5, Scugog council agreed that councillors Robert Espey and Lawrence Malcolm would inspect the building and come up with suggestions on how the situa- tion can be improved. March 19 - a BILL DAVIS for ONTARIO provincial grants to help pay for the costs of preparing and circulating the by-law. The Township printed 7500 copies of the by-law for mailing to every property owner on the tax rolls in Scugog. Mr. Cuddie said that when the copies went into the mails three weeks ago there was some confusion on the part of the public with many people calling the Township office to ask what the by-law means and why they received a copy in the mail. The total cost of prepar- ation, circulation and printing will likely be in the $50,000 range, and to date the Township has received $18,500 in grants from the provincial government. There could be additional grant money available to the Township if further dead- lines are met. The nature of the objec- tions covers many aspects of the by-law, but one of the most prominent concerns the restrictions in the environ- POLLS CLOSE AT 7:00 P.M. The lot size in the hamlet residential zones has also caused objections, and still others were the result of failure by the new by-law to recognize existing land uses. The latter can likely be corrected without hearings in front of the OMB. Mr. Cuddie expects that up to half the objections can be corrected or dealt with prior to the start of OMB hearings this fall. The by-law has been more than a year in the prep aration. by municipal planning consultants. One of the prime functions of the new by-law was to stand- ardize property and land use provisions in all four wards of Scugog.
