(From page 1) The delegation told councillors that the museum is being hit with increased costs for just about every- thing which is the reason why the Board is asking for the substantial hike in the Township grant. Although council took no action on the request for a $7500 grant this year, a decision will be made when the council sets the full municipal budget next month. After the meeting, Mrs. Baird said that if the museum does not get the full $7500 grant this year, the operation of the museum will suffer. 2 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., March 11, 1981 Museum bud A large portion of the operating budget goes to pay the $11,500 salary of the full-time curator, and during the meeting Mrs. Baird had high words of praise for the work done by curator Trish Holman. "Trish is worth more money than we are paying. her, and the museum is very fortunate to have her work for that amount," she said. Later she said that if the museum does not have a full time curator, grants from the provincial government amounting to more than$6000 could be withdrawn. Maybe the joker thinks the spring pot-holes in some of the roads are a bit of a bummer. getup to about $3000 this year, the museum's other major source of revenue comes the Lake Scugog Historical Society. This will amount to $3500 this year, almost all of which will be raised by the now famous Canoe Nonquon Race held the first Saturday of June each year. Council gave approval last week to close a section of Concession Eight at the Nonquon River where the canoes start out on the 20 mile race, and councillors also voted to contribute $100 to the race and give organizers permission to use Palmer Park as the finish area for the race. Scugog Shores Museum has been described as one of the best 'small museums" in Ontario and is open to the public from April through to the end of November. The very popular Pioneer Days will be held May 16 and 17 this year, and this two-day extravaganza features numerous events and displays depicting life in the Scugog area during days gone by. Speakers do well ° fi - in finals The local girls did ex- tremely well in the finals of the Region 33 Lions Club oral communication competition held at Omemee last week. This speaking contest is for children from Grades 6, 7 and 8 and draws from Brechin in the north to Port Perry in the south. Julia Bryan shared first place and Crystal Tremble was runner- 'up. TN J Fire protection from Uxbridge will cost Scugog Twp. more The cost of fire protection for citizens in the northwest corner of Scugog is going to cost the Township more money this year, possibly a lot more. Members of both Scugog and Uxbridge council concluded at a joint meeting March 3 that the agreement between the two Townships needs to be changed, but no firm decision was made on how much more Scugog will pay for the Uxbridge Fire department to provide protection for the residents of that area of Scugog Township. Under the terms. of the agreement which has been in effect since 1974, but has not been changed since 1977, Uxbridge Fire department responds to - call from residents living in a 9000 acre section of Scugog bounded roughly by the Brock-Scugog border on the north, Regional Road 8 on the south, the Marsh Hill Road on the east and the Scugog- Uxbridge border on the west. Uxbridge Mayor Bill Ballinger told the joint, meeting last week that the present agreement calls for Scugog to pay Uxbridge $6 per hour per man for each fire call answered; a flat to book your table for our X 2nd ANNUAL rate of $250 per call for the fire truck; plus an annual retainer fee of $1500. Mayor Ballinger said that currently Uxbridge fire- fighters earn about $8 per hour, so in effect Uxbridge had been losing money when the department responded to a call in' Scugog. The meeting was told that this year, Uxbridge firefighters will probably earn in the neighbourhood of $9 per hour while fighting a fire, or a full $3 per hour more than the agreement with Scugog calls for.
