Cornish have had a very busy week with the Sunder- land Music Festival. Stu- dents have done extremely well and should be congratu- lated on their tremendous effort. The first place winners will be performing for everyone. The first place winners are: Grade 3 choir - 88 marks; Union Choir Grades 1-4 - 89 marks; Vocal Enrichment Choir - 85 marks; Triple Trio - 85; and Girls SSA Choir - 85 marks. In instrumental the winners are Clarinet Solo - Heidi Spannbauer - 86; Flute Solo - Beth Crammer - 87; Woodwind Duet - Yvonne Gottschalk and Julie Wil- "72 liamson - 84 marks. Wood- ~"p wind Ensemble - Bonnie - Bennet, Zoe Martin, Beth Crammer - 85 marks; Saxophone Solo - Janice Williamson - 87 marks. Trumpet Solo - Shane Mezrow - 87 marks; French Horn Solo - Nancy Nippard - 85 marks; Tuba Solo - Kyle Dinaut - 86 marks; Brass Ensemble - Cornish Brass Quintet - 85 marks. Concert Band - R.H. Cornish Jr. Concert Band - 88 marks. In Curling - On February 18, Brad Howsam's rink won over Steve Barton's team 4-3. Keith MacKinnon"s team swept their way to a 3-2 victory over Stewart Wood's team. Brian Sutherland's team out-curled Norm MacKinnon's rink by a score of 64. On February 25 Brian's team won over Stewarts by default. Steve's team beat Norm's rink with a 6-2 score and - Keith's rink was vic- torious over Brad's rink, the score was 7-3. February has been a busy month for the Grade 8 Girls Basketball team. They have played Sunderland and Cart- wright Schools as well as participating in the Oshawa and Joseph Gould tourna- ments. The grade 6 and 7 teams are now underway and preparing for their respec- tive tournaments in Port Perry during the month of _ April. The keen competition between 'Cornish and Cart- wright has produced some exciting "basketball for the Grade 7 team. The House League prog- ram at all three grade levels is in full swing. Noon hour games have provided all girls with the opportunity to participate in this popular sport at R.H. Cornish. The winner was Judy Luke, who spoke on "The Typical Day in the 1800's'. The runner-up was Jimmy Jackman who spoke on "Speeches". All were impressed with the excellent quality of all the speeches. They were well researched and well presented. The judges were Mrs. Kent Farndale, Mrs. Audrey Lee and Miss Adderley. They felt honoured to take part in this splendid program. The class representatives who took part in the finals were: for Grade 6 - Doug Arculus, Lisa Bailey, Shelagh Donald- son, Jimmy Jackman, Matty McDougall, Sonya Raffin, and Margaret Rourland. For Grade 5 - Lesley Biffin, Judy Burkett, Brett Drew and Jody Luke. Grade 4 - Lianne Phillips, Cristine Pryde. Inthe intermediate contest Crystal Tremble took first place with her speech on "Ontario." The runner-up was Susan Lehane with her speech on "School." The Class representatives for the Grade 7 and 8 classes were: Jennifer Philpot, Korin Drew and Rebecca Kahn. Grade 8 - Crystal Tremble, Susan Lehane, and Laura Trembley. On Sunday, Crystal and Susan competed in the Legion Contest and each emerged with a trophy. Crystal took first and Susan placed third.
