Heron The ladies Bible class met last week on Wednesday evening at the home of Rose Heron. Because of the foggy weather there was a small attendance. The President Catherine Humphrey con- ducted the meeting and gave the opening Worship Service and Chrissie McKinney led {n prayer. The program was given by Ruth Oliver who used a very interesting tape from the Women Alive Conference. The next meeting will be at the home of Nellie Hopkins March 11th. We hope for better weather conditions. Mrs. B. Wood and Mrs. E. Heron attended the Sum- mary Day for Crewel em- broidery held in the Ux- bridge Arena last Thursday. Several from this area enjoyed the Valentine Tea in Brooklin Hall, sponsored by the Brooklin Kinnettes. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Baster and family of Epsom, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Jones and Mrs. Leola Fiss of Glen Major, and Mrs. Lila Falkner of Port Perry visited recently with Miss Hilda and Mr. Walter Hopkins. Miss Joan Senco visited with her sister and family in Thunder Bay recently. Mr. Lawrence Doble of Toronto was a guest of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Ashton last Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Rowe and daughter Penny of Winnipeg are visiting with Ashburn news their parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. Heron this week. Mr. Herb Ashton, Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Ashton, Ronald and Arnold spent Sunday of last week with Mrs. Ruth Purdy of Mono Centre. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Daw visited recently with Mr. and Mrs. James Daw of Toronto. The weather was quite dull and foggy last Sunday morning but there was a fair turnout at Church. Rev. McEntyre told the children a story about giving and receiving and the message was from Ephesians - The Winning Attitude. Mrs. Douglas Johnston and Mrs. Ray Porter sang a beautiful duet entitled - Whispering Hope. Next Sunday marks the beginning of Lent and Holy Communion will be cele- brated. The sympathy of the community is extended to the Burroughs family in the passing of Mrs. Clarence Burroughs. The family lived in this area for a number of years. Have a good week and take time to count your blessings. Mrs. S. McNeely, president, welcomed all and a favourite hymn, "Dare to be a Daniel" opened the meeting. This was followed by sentence Prayers from each member. Mrs. G. Heaslip, secretary treasurer, was in charge of the Devotional with the theme '"'Caring by Sharing" from the 19th Chapter of Leviticus. The minutes were read and approved, the financial report given and correspondence read. This included thank you notes, a letter from the Hospital Auxiliary with notice of the Spring Fair in the Latcham Centre -in May. The World Day of Prayer Service will be held in Nestleton Presbyterian Church on March 6th at 2 p-m. Arrangements were made for the program and lunch. Donations to the Fair booth will be sent on May 2nd. A card was signed for a sick member and one of sympathy to Mr. George Fernie's daughter. Mr. Fernie, after whom Fernie House was named was a friend of Nestleton Church and a memoriam of $25.00 was forwarded to Fernie House in his name. Mrs. Heaslip presented the program. The Roll Call was answered with verses from the Bible and explanations. Mrs. Hooey read 'When God Created Mothers," and Miss Ruth Proutt read 'The House of Many Lamps". Mrs. Heaslip continued with the day's theme "Carrying On". We were reminded that there is no such thing as a small kindness. Whenever one life touches another there is always an opportun- ity to show we care. We must reach out to another person, help someone whose troubles are worse than our own. A prayer of kindness, the hymn "Jesus Loves Me" and the Mizpah Benediction closed the meeting. The usual dainty lunch was served and Happy Birthday greeted Mr. McNeely when he joined the group, as he celebrated his 80th birthday on Thursday. A thank you was extended by Mrs. H. McLaughlin to Mrs. Heaslip and all who helped in any way with program and lunch to make an enjoyable after- noon of study and fellowship. Nestleton Presbyterian Church On Sunday, Feb. 22nd, 1981 the regular service of worship was held at 11 a.m. with a service of dedication for the new members of the Board of Managers, the Trustees and the Executive of the Ladies' Aid as well as the organist, Mrs. Scott, the church officer, Mrs. Dorothy Lee and the auditors. Rev. Fred Swann continu- ed the series of sermons on the Parables dwelling on the 'Parable of the Rich Fool." A good attendance on hand for this special service. Next Sunday at 11 a.m. Eastern Star A number from this area were on hand for the special Brother's night held on Thursday evening, Feb. 10th in the Masonic Temple, Queen St. Port Perry with a small attendance from other Chapters due to extremely cold weather. However, a warm welcome awaited those present as Worthy Matron Stella Dennis and Worthy Patron Arnold Taylor extended a very cordial greeting from the East to one and all. After business was com- pleted and Chapter closed a Valentine Draw was a feature. Prize winners were * Emma Cook and Bill Nicholls. In charge of refreshments for Brother's night Chef Bill Nicholls hosted a superb lunch consisting of delicious sandwiches, cake, coffee and tea, assisted by the Chapter brothers bringing to a close another enjoyable evening. Caesarea Euchre Results A good attendance at the regular Wednesday evening card party and the lucky folk were: 1. This prize was divided as Marilyn Hewson and Pearl Day each had a score of 91. Low prize was also a tie and had to be divided between Gwen Robbins and Della Marlow with a score of 45. Refresh- ments were served at the close and a social hour enjoy- ed over the lunch. Tonight (Wednesday) as usual for an interesting night out. Try to attend. In the choir a trio, Bernice Mairs, Gail and Laurie Malcolm sang an old favour- ite hymn, "My Jesus, I Love which was much enjoyed by the congregation. Rev. Victor Parsons presented a thought provok- ing sermon entitled 'Poised and Ready" giving those present much to think about. A floral arrangement in memory of Mr. Herbert Vine graced the sanctuary. Family News of Interest Gordon Barraball of Caesarea won first place in the Public Speaking Contest held Wednesday Feb. 18 sponsored by the Lion's Club of Port Perry. Gordon is an excellent scholar, a grade 13 student attending Black- stock High. Congratulations from Win, Joe and Marion Parry of Caesarea. The folks from this area also offer their heartiest congrat- ulations to Gordon. Special News Item Mr. Fred Dayes of Nestle- ton had a pleasant surprise on Sunday afternoon when he received a phone call from his nephew Walter Palmer of Nottingham County, England. Walter is planning to spend a few weeks with his 'Uncle Fred and-Aunt Mabel -- Dayes later on in the spring. During the course of the conversation, of particular interest Water mentioned a 9 inch snowfall in Nottingham County. At the present time which is a very unusual snowfall for England. A bit drastic to say the least! Family Activities Mr. and Mrs. Sam Cawker, Scugog Point Road attended the 80th birthday party of Mr. Stan McNeely, Williams Point, on Saturday afternoon and enjoyed the festive occasion very much. Very best wishes from this area. Company over the past ten days at the Cawker farm were: Mrs. Norma Wilson, Mr. and Mrs. Ted Wilson, - Michael and Kelly of Dun- troon, Mrs. June Carruthers, Stayner, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Cawker, Sudbury, Mr. and Mrs. Alan Cawker and Christie, Mr. Grant Cawker, Chris and Curtis and friends Jeff Armstrong and Peter Olin all of Oshawa. Sympathy The sympathy of the area is extended to the family of the later Mr. Herbert Vine who has been a resident of Port Perry Nursing Home for some time. Greenbank news The unseasonable flooding and dense fog did not dampen the spirits of anyone from attending the Women's Institute Crewel Summary Day at Uxbridge last Thursday. There were about 250 people who attended and the exhibits were well worth the trip. The variety and quality of workmanship were remarkable and lots of new ideas on how to use this embroidery were shown. The Home Economist was most encouraged with the lovely entries and the attend- ance for such a rainy day. Forms were passed out for completion listing categories for future courses. We were pleased to know that the concert given by Hugh Baird was enjoyed by all and was very instrumen- tal in boasting the school band fun to go the B.C. Congratu- lations Harry. Donna and Wayne Irwin had a pleasant surprise when friends visited from Edmon- ton, Alberta last week. The family and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Elson joined them on Saturday evening to celebrate their fortieth wedding annivers- ary. Mrs. Eileen Beaton of Sunderland, Mr. and Mrs. Willie Beaton and Brendon of Oshawa, and Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Beaton were dinner guests of Mrs. Marjorie Beaton on Saturday. The Junior Farmer service was held at Green- bank church on Sunday even- ing with the choir rendering three beautiful anthems. Rev. Smeeton have a thoughtful sermon on Love. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Couper- thwaite visited with their daughter and her husband Marion and Les Jermey near Orillia for a few days last week. The Evening Unit of the U.C.W. will be held on Wed. March 4th at 8:00 p.m. at the home of Mrs. Neil Hunter. Mrs. John Bruce will lead us in Devotions and Mrs. Len Jarvis in music. All ladies are welcome.
