A I Ne RRM EH SE wa Long season ends for two local teams by Danny Millar Port Perry High School Junior Rebels won its final regular season basketball game 60-53 over Pickering Trojans Tuesday Feb. 17 but it may have lost more than that---a lot more! Mid-way through the first quarter- Brett Oosterman, one of the best rebounder and inside shooters in junior play, jumped for a rebound and came down on his knee. He was down on the floor for several minutes before being literally carried off by his teammates. Later in the week he appeared on crutch- es and watched the team's first playoff game from the sidelines, where he is likely to remain for the duration of the season. Oosterman has been a starter on the junior squad for the past two seasons and his absence will undoubtedly be felt in this week's LOSSA semi-finals at GL Roberts, and at Durham College for the finals, providing, of course the Rebels make it that far. Guard Todd Wilbur played one of his best games of the year for the Rebels as he lifted the team once Ooster- man went down. He played an inspired defence, getting early steals off an effective zone press, and even pulled down a few rebounds. Offensively, he was peerless as he sank field goals from all over the court. He had 12 points in the first half alone and finished with a game high 20. Led by Wilbur, the Rebels showed that they could come back from a defecit and the win was a stopper for them, coming on the heels of back to back losses against Henry Street and GL Roberts. Port was down 17-9 at the end of the first quarter before Wil- bur took matters into his own hands. Long shot field goals by him and Rob Burnett drew Port to within two points and then another burnett lay up tied the score a few minutes later. Wilbur sank a pair of free throws to ..,... give the Rebs a 23-21 lead "*.i¢ and by the end of the half they were securely in the driver's seat 27-21. Or were they? Pickering grabbed a handful of turn- overs early in the third quarter and converted them into a 27-27 deadlock. With the score still tied at 31-31 later in the frame, the Trojans were hit with a technical foul that would eventually cost them four points and a loss of momen- tum. Burnett tossed in both free throws and then Peter Stone scored a basket off the ensuing in-bounds play as Port took charge once more. They were up by eight points by the end of the quarter. Port Perry went into a stall in the last minute of play that had the Trojans literally running all over the floor in search of the ball. Stone finished with 13 points and Burnett had 12. P.P.H.S. sports fans had an opportunity to witness an awesome senior basketball team as Pickering handed Port a 70-21 loss. The senior Trojans looked like they didn't even miss all-star center John Christenson, whose head to head confront- ations under the backboard with George Cope over the past two years are memor- able to many Port faithfuls. Port Perry finished this, its last game of the year, without the services of forward Curt Pinkowski, who is still caring for a chronically bad back. Port was a winless 0-11" through the LOSSA schedule, as were the Midget Rebels. The midgets came close to gaining their first win of a long, frustrating season when they fell six points short of the Trojans 40-34. Pickering is one of the top schools in Durham region for developing basketball players. They seem to have a grass roots program, start- ing with the first year midgets and producing front line players right from the start. This was graphically illustrated against Port when four players ended up with eight points, which is rather well balanced scoring for midgets. Port started strongly, opening up a 10-2 lead at the end of the opening quarter. They began to falter slightly in the second quarter but still held the edge in the frame. They were ahead 20-10 at half time before the bottom fell out in the third quarter. Nothing went right for Port Perry from the 17th to the 24th minute as they were outscored 22-2 during those eight minutes. Pickering owned the offensive boards as they took three or four shots at a time. The fourth period was slower and closer and last minute field goals by Harry Sillen and Jeff Kerr drew Port to within six points.
