PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., February 25,1981 -- 13 Port Perry Atoms win their own tourney by Danny Millar Port Perry Malmont Farms became the only PPMHA team to win its own hockey tournament this season when the powerhouse team swept through three games, Saturday, February 21, outscoring its opposition 22-2. It's hard not to delve into superlatives when descri- bing this team and its coach- es. They went through Newmarket, Oshawa LNHL, and Otonabee like a hot knife through butter, much to the delight of a sizable home crowd. They are last year's regional champions, winning handily over Brighton in the final, and look set to repeat - in that role, at least based upon the weekend perfor- mance. Coaches Dave Barkey and Dave Ballingall, and manager Bob Jamieson seem to have done a master- ful job in the past two sea- sons with the squad. Port plays a strong pass- ing and positional game, the likes of which are seldom seen in players that age. Rarely were they caught out of position and the passing plays they come up with are truly entertaining. Gone too, is the often seen ruffianism of older athletes. In all, three Port players scored three goal hat tricks and three more had two goal games in a well balanced attack. Forward Brad Menzies paced the offence with five goals while Mark Barkey, John Lally, and Ron Brown had three goals each. Barkey and Brown had three goals each in a 11-1 romp over Newmarket in the first game. Menzies had three in the final win over Otonabee. The championship final was tarnished in the third period when Otonabee coach Bob Allen was ejected by referee Robert Franssen for continually arguing close calls. He had been warned earlier but the straw that broke the camel's back came at 2:26 of the third period when there was no penalty called after an Otonabee player was upended. The traditional cries of "homer" cascaded out of the stands from the frustrated Otona- bee supporters whose team was down 5-1 at the time. Port Perry showed that it is a team that takes advan- tage of a change of momen- tum, possessing an almost killer instinct when it senses an opposing team is in disarray. Many of its goals came in bunches after the other team became disil- lusioned and is floundering. Port opened up a 5-0 lead on Otonabee in the second period when Lally and Menzies scored moments apart on the same shift. Darrick Julian replied for the visitors when he carried the puck in from the right side of the net when goal- keeper Stacey Ballingall was down. Ballingall's perfor- mance could have been overlooked in the wake of the strong showing by the Port skaters but he allowed only two goals during the entire day and performed well. He was one of the goalkeepers on the championship unit of a year ago. Darryl Leatherdale, playing left wing, scored the only goal of the final ten minute frame at 7:21 on a rebound from Steve Connors, who had a good day offen- sively. Left wing Menzies and Scott Feasby each struck for two goals and Mike Sorley had the other in a 5-0 shutout Sade £1 of ed V.Y 3 OUTBOARD MOTORS 2-10hp............. 11-25hp............ 26-40hp............ 3 Cylinder V4 Cylinder O.M.C 6 Cylinder Merc ..$33.00 .. $36.00 ..$38.00 (Plus Parts) FACTORY TRAINED MECHANIC FREE PICKUP & DELIVERY Dealer In Lawn Boy Lawn Mowers Yard-Man Mowers & Tractors Mercury Outboard Motors Homelite Chain Saws & Trimmers Parts in Stock for Briggs-Stratton & Tecumseh, Lawn Boy & Clinton (Prices Expire March 31st, 1981) WILLY & SON SMALL ENGINE REPAIRS 64 Water Street - Port Perry - 985-3192 (Across from the Ballpark) LSTA wy 44 The Port Perry Malmont Farms Atoms won the annual Lions Club tournament Saturday at the Scugog Arena with an easy victory over Otonabee. The score could easily have been doubled or even tripled had it not been for the services rendered by Steve Collins in the Oshawa net. Collins kept Oshawa in the game during the first period, which was totally dominated by Port. He was on his toes constantly, stopping Menzies and other attackers repeat- edly. The bubble broke for Collins in the second period. Menzies connected on a high wrist shot at 4:27 after he slipped around the Oshawa defence on a power play and Feasby made it 2-0 on a wrist shot from the slot after Port won a draw in the Oshawa end. Feasby struck again 1:04 into the last frame on a weak rolling wrist shot that went through a traffic jam to get past Collins. Menzies de- posited another high wrist shot-behind Collins and left wing Sorley put a shot through the overworked netminder's legs. Menzies made a good play late in the first period against Newmarket to set up Barkey"s first goal. He stick- handled around the defence and then slid a pass ahead to his linemate, who put a shot into the corner past Graig Boland, who had his prob- lems in the nets. Newmarket fell behind 2-0 at the end of the first period and 5-1 at the end of the second before the bottom fell out in the last session. Barkey and Connors scored just over a minute apart, to make it 7-1 and scarcely two minutes later Menzies sent Barkey into the clear with a well timed head-man pass coming out of his own end. Barkey finished off the play with the eighth Port tally. Just before the face-off in Port's end, center Lally went over to speak to left wing Brown, and then motioned to his defenceman on the back line. Lally won the draw, drew it back, and then he and Brown broke straight up the middle. The defenceman passed straight up the middle for a two man break away with only an empty net facing them. Brown made no mistake, as did most of his teammates throughout the day. 66 Brock St. W., Uxbridge 852-5291 TT Ta Ta Tel To Tl Tel Te Tol To Tl TATA TA TATA TUT LTT i: re RTT Ta TT Ta TA TT TT Th To Ta To TA a Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Ta Te TL Ta To TAT TATA TA TATA TATA TAT D.
