DTA MATIR UWL 85 AM 2s PEA SL AT 20 MARA LEY Ahh : | ¥ Pwd cantly askethall teams run into Laker by Danny Millar It took 19 games and almost an entire high school basketball season. but the wheels finally came off the Port Perry Junior Rebels's bandwagon. After 18 wins without a defeat, they were whipped by Henry Street Hawks and GL Roberts Lakers last week. The midget and senior teams keep leading with their chins. They also dropp- ed both games during the week to remain mired in last place ir LOSSA standings. The key in both Junior games was Port's inability to control rebounds. something they were able to do easily _ through the winning streak, and the Rebels lack of over- all team speed. The Hawks beat them to the draw contin- ually with a quick passing, fast break offence. Both teams also managed to close down Port Perry's high scoring tandem of Brett Oosterman and Todd Wilbur. Wilbur's 12 points against the Hawks, Monday, Febru- ary 9. was the only Rebel scoring otal in double figures. Oosterman's com- bined offensive measured 15 points. including six points against Roberts. one of his lowest totals of the season. Wilbur could only muster six points against the Lakers as well. It was obvious late in both games that Port was about to become unglued. Qosterman and Wilbur started velling at their teammates on the court after plays went awry against Henry Street and at one point. Oosterman threat- ened a Hawk after being fouled en route to the 45-33 loss. Wilbur got himself in foul trouble in the first quar- ter. picking up three person- als in the first six minutes. Both teams dropped off into their less hectic zone defences in the second quar- ter as Henry Street enlarged. its lead to four points. Rebel forward Mark Phillips saw little action in the first half and did not return. Surpris- ingly. he did not return during the second half when the Rebels could have used his rebounding strength. He also saw little action against GL Roberts when his board clearing abilities were once again sorely needed. The Rebels came back to tie the score on early third period field goals by Peter Stone and Wilbur and it was the only scoring of the first three minutes. G. Parry was left wide open under Port's basket and converted two easy layups to reacquire Hawks' four point advant- age. Henry had compiled a seven point advantage by the end of the third quarter. the other points coming on a three point play after Wilbur was tagged with his fourth foul. The Hawks took absolute command of the match in the final eight minutes as Rebels continued to lose their composure. They took a time out with 2:32 remain- ing while they were losing by seven points. facing an uphill struggle thev had not needed to experience this 'year. Moments after they returned to the floor; Oosterman slammed the ball back into an official following a Port miscue. It was a strikingly similar story against the Lakers at Teams ready for battles by Danny Millar At least two second round playoff opponents have been set for Port Perry Minor Hockey Association travell- ig teams.and both come from Lakefield. Port Perry Midget A's and Juveniles face Lakefield in seperate series starting this week. The Midgets ousted Uxbridge in three straight matches and start Monday at 8:00 p.m. at home. The Juveniles hit the road for the first game before returning Thursday. February 19 at 9:30 p.m. There is also a chance that they will play Sunday, February 22 at home but would need to win the coin toss at the first game for the right to secure that date. The Juveniles also eliminated Uxbridge in three straight matches. One of the biggest first round upset victims was the Pee Wee A's as Uxbridge took them to the five game limit before dispatching them with a 4-2 win. Both Bantam teams from Port came out on the wrong end of the series, the A's losing once and the B team not at all. The Midget B's have lost all three games in the round robin so far, all by decisive margins. and don't figure to pull off a miracle. That series resumes again Wednesday. February 18 at Port. The Bantam A's go against the Markham B squad that night also. The next big PPMHA event is this Saturday's eight team Atom tournament, featuring the local team which was the regional champion last year. home, Friday, February-13 as the Rebels were outplayed to the tune of 41-33. Tim Pye brought down the lion's share of the rebounds en route to the win. The first quarter was a defence oriented frame that ended in a 6-6 deadlock. It remained that way through the second as well with Roberts gaining a 16-12 advantage. They increased it to seven points with one period left. Roberts used a seldom seen 2-2-1 zone defence which set up a box in the key that prevented Oosterman and Stone from penetrating that area, which is where they do most of their damage. Since those two front court men- were kept at a distance, the majority of the rebounds fell into Laker hands. Ken Upshaw led Roberts with 14 points while Pye had nine. Rob Burnett had nine for Port. The basketball fans at PPHS had a chance to witness the basketball prowess of Lakers senior forward Joe Roznik as the Rebles lost 67-34 in the second game of the after- noon. Roznik, one of the top players in the circuit, is an excellent pass and ball hand- ler, at times looking more like a guard, and his 26 points attest to his shooting abilities. He plays under the basket and was the game's leading rebounder on defence. Port Perry went into the game without the services of forward Curt Pinkowski, who has an ailing back. He - will not dress for the final game of the year at home against Pickering Trojans + this week. Cam Muir, the starting center, scored 11 points for the Rebs as he played a strong game. Guard Dave Dickson also finished in two digit scoring with ten points. Port's other starting guard, Kevin Harris, did not enter the game until the fourth quarter and he performed strongly in the brief stint. Marty Udall missed a Laker free throw with 26 seconds remaining, that would have doubled Port 68034 had it gone in. The Midget Rebels put up a game struggle before losing 38-30 to the Lakers. The game marked the return to action of Daryl Mussel- man following a hand injury that kept him out of the line-up through most of the season. Mark Goreski, Port's best scorer, kept the Rebels close with his outside shooting in the first half. The first half was one of the cleanest witnessed in Midget play this year, as only five fouls were called, three by the Lakers. The midgets lost 53-29 to Henry Street while the Seniors put up---a game struggle in their 52-36 set- back. Pinkowski had an excellent 17 points. Cam Muir of the Port Perry High School Senior Rebels snared this rebound during basketball action Friday afternoon against G.L. Roberts Lakers. It was not a good day for the Port Perry teams as all three squads went down to defeat, including the Juniors, who are now 18 and two for the season. [See story for details.] Belles whip Whithy by Marg White On Saturday, February 14, the Chris Allen Aluminum Belles travelled to Whitby for their last league game against Whitby. Scoring was Wendy Burton, Bonnie Bridge, Cindy Barton, and Rhonda White with one goal a piece, while Janice Jack- man had two goals; Rhonda White had 3 assists. Later on Saturday the Belles invited the High School Teachers for a game. The teachers came out skating hard and fast and adapted to picking up the ring very well. Archie Andrews and myself would like to thank the teachers of John Addi- son, Glen Rideout, Russ Baird, Ted McComb, John Reed, John Scott, Ted Wilson and Gerry West for giving our girls a very good work- out.
