Improved Bantam B defeat Woodville by Danny Millar A pair of goals and an all rounded strong effort from winger Tony Kersten pro- pelled Port Perry Canadian Tire Bantam B's to its second win of the hockey season. It was an exciting 5-4 victory over visiting Woodville Monday, January 19. « The Port Perry team has been playing well lately, but still only have a win over Sunderland and a pair of ties to go along with this recent effort. They have been rejuvenated by the improved work of goaltender Stephen Patterson and Bantam A cuts Fred Cockerton Jr. and Jeff Cox. Cox scored the third Port marker. Patterson's work between the pipes reflects the play of the team so far this season. He had trouble at the beginn- ing of the season but improvement has been.. noticeable. He made several key stops in the Woodville game that could have turned it around had they gone the other way. The game was tense right up until the end. The two teams were never more than a goal apart and the outcome wasn't settled until the 11:42 mark of the third period when Port's Cearns slipped a backhander behind goaler Ron Stewart's legs. Kersten took a slashing penalty late in the. game that - allowed Woodville to press in Port's end. Port was aided by Patterson's netminding and a strategical error by Woodville when they elected Ringette (From page 14) lack enthusiasm, but exper- ience. The first two periods ended in deadlocks, at 1-1 after the first and 3-3 15 minutes later. Kersten opened the scoring when he carried the puck in close and slipped it in the side of the net at 5:53. Willy Thronburry tied it from his centerman's position when he fired a shot passed Patter- son, who was screened by his own defenceman. Thorn- burry also set up a pair of goals. ' Kersten put Port up 2-1 early in the second period with a power play goal but Mike tied it again when he scored on a breakaway after taking a pass off the boards at center ice. Port had to play catch up for the only time after Robbie Rea scored but Cox drew them even for the third time after taking a pass from the slot and slipping it past Stewart. He was hit in the stomach on the play but skated off under his own power. Dean Smith, the team's top offensive player, and Cearns scored in the final period and Phil Archibald replied for Woodville.
