Scugog council took no action Monday afternoon on a request for financial help for members of the Port Perry High School Band who are leaving in March for a week-long exchange visit to Coquitlam, British Colum- hia. Howard Hall and Jack Dowson, members of the Band Parents Association formed recently to help in fund raising activities, told council that the band must raise $8000 as its share of the air fare and other expenses for the 60 members who will be making the trip. The Association is seeking $2000 from the Township, but the request was deferred to allow the council's finance committee to study the matter. After council decided to defer the matter to the finance committee, Mayor Jerry Taylor cautioned that while the exchange may be "a very worthwhile oppor- tunity" for both the Port Perry band and the -band from Coquitlam who will be arriving here February 7, the Township does not have any policy regarding grants for cultural exchanges. "I don't want to make any promises or build up any hopes, but there are going to be a lot of financial res- traints facing the Township this year,"' said Mayor Taylor. Mr. Hall told the meeting that the Band Association .has lined up several fund raising activities including a flea market and auction, a draw for a colour TV set, and the band members have been asked to come up with $2000. The federal government is picking up 66 per cent of the air fare for the band members under a cultural exchange program. CofC, Township buy 'ad, will probably get tourist booth There is a possibility that a tourist information booth will be set up again in Scugog Township this summer. The booth, operated and funded jointly by the local Chamber of Commerce and the Central Ontario Tourist Association was located on Highway 7A in 1979, but it was moved out of Scugog in 1980 due to an apparent lack of funding. However, Scugog Cham- ber of Commerce president Howard Hall told council Monday afternoon there is a chance the booth will be back here this summer. Mr. Hall was asking the Zoning (From page 1) Oshawa lawyer Ron Arm- strong who represents O'Malley Construction strongly criticized the action stating that lands his client owns in-Prince Albert should -- nol have been re-zoned from residential to holding. "That re-zoning should not be in the by-law, or should have been taken out before third and final reading," stated Mr. Armstrong. He said having the desig- nation changed after third and final reading will be a complicated and costly matter. The main purpose of the new by-law is to standardize zoning regulations in all four wards in Scugog Township. Until now, there had been separate by-laws for former Reach Township, Port Perry Village and Scugog Island, and no zoning by-law in former Cartwright Town- ship. One specific area of contention in the new by-law has been the designation of environmental protection areas with several objec- tions already lodged with the council. council to split the cost of a half-page ad in a tourist magazine with the Chamber of Commerce when he stated: "I really hate to say this, but if we take out the ad in the magazine, we may see the Association come up with funds for the tourist booth in Scugog Township." The magazine is published by the Association and about 25,000 copies are distributed to visitors to Ontario each summer. The cost of the half-page ad is $385 and will be shared by the Township and the Chamber of Commerce. bylaw The copy of the by-law circulated to all property owners in the Township will be printed on newsprint to cut down costs, and likely will start going out in the mail by March 1.
