Trailing 5-0 to Wellington early in the second period of the championship game Port rallied to tie it 5-5 and then 6-6 before finally succumb- ing 7-6 to a powerful squad in the annual PeeWee tourna- ment at Scugog Arena Satur- day, January 24. It was a remarkable comeback by the hosting team, which had looked impressive in two earlier wins over Uxbridge and Lakefield. They were up against a tremendous for- ward with the nondescript name of Smith, who was in on at least six of the Welling- ton goals, including his scoring of the winner. They fell behind 6-5 before tying it again and then finally ended up losing on Smith's goal. Wellington showed a strong passing and skating team, which made for a very entertaining hockey game. Smith was at the controls on offence as he scored the first two goals, set up the fourth with an excellent play, and scored the fifth early in the second period. Port Perry defenders looked in awe of Smith for the first period. The first few minutes went end to end as the two free-wheeling teams measured each other before Smith warmed up. His first goal came at 2:37 of the first ten minute frame when he stickhandled around de- fenceman Jeff Cockerton and Andy Sytsma and then deked a sprawling John Moore to score. Moore had been a standout during the first match against Ux- bridge. Less than a minute later Smith cut past Sytsma and fired a high wrist shot into Moore's upper glove hand corner. He assisted on the third goal when Moore blocked his shot but failed to corral the rebound. He relayed a superb cross ice pass to Pickard to score Wellington's fourth goal with 3:06 left in the frame. There were very few whistles during the first period and the four goals represented about half of the play stoppages. There wasn't an icing call made until under four minutes to play. Smith made it 5-0 at 2:39 of the second period before Port Perry staged its monumental comeback. Chalking up goals in this game were Janice Jackman- 4, Kelly Raines-3, Diane McDougall-2, Michelle Newell and Julie Abraham €ach with 1 goal. Port's second game of the tournament was against Bala. This game was the game of the day. Going into overtime, the score ended up 8 to 7 in Port's favour. Scoring goal for goal the two teams fought it out right up to the very end. Diane McDouglall is credited with the tie breaker plus one goal earlier in the game. Both Kelly Raines and Janice Jackman put in two goals each.
