by Danny Millar The playoff structure for almost all Port Perry Minor Hockey Association teams was set at an OMHA meeting Friday, January 23 and in all but three teams the first round is a head to head series against Uxbridge. PPMHA President Grant Williams and OMHA Contact Man Doug Scott attended the arduous meeting which took over three hours to complete and came back with the opening round confronta- tions in all but two teams. The Atoms will compete in a seven team round robin tournament with most of the teams in the Lakeshore League. Whoever finished highest in the roundel between Uxbridge and Port Perry, the only two CC teams entered, will advance to meet the Zone 4 winner. Teams such as Lakefield, Bancroft, and Ernestown are in that group so should the Atoms repeat as zone title- ists they will have a couple of long trips to make. Port Perry and Uxbridge representatives suggested to District Convenor Ed Grimshaw that they could "possibly "arrange to play another straight on encoun- ter between the two neigh- bouring towns. But Mr. Grimshaw needed an immediate reply, which Mr. Scott was unable to give so they were included in the tournament. The winner of [<n Em a. The Novice category was discussed only briefly and they are likely to play in a similar round robin as the Atoms. A new format was sugges- ted at the meeting for teams beaten out in the round. They could play an extra consolation series which would provide more hockey for the youngsters, which Mr. Grimshaw repeatedly stressed. Port Perry Ball Motors Midget B's in the only other PPMHA squad which doesn't meet Uxbridge in a series. They play Uxbridge and Pickering in a double round robin which is the identical format used last year. In all, Port will play eight games, starting February 2 in Uxbridge. The first home date is two days later when they host Pickering. Last year, Port beat out Uxbridge but was then eliminated by Pickering. So far in the league play, Uxbridge has demonstrated a superiority. One of the closest match ups is liable to pit the two bitter rivals Bantam A teams together in a best of five series. Uxbridge hosts the first game January 28 and play resumes at Scugog Arena two nights later. These two teams have played some of the tighest hockey imaginable over the past months with the last game between them a 6-3 victory for Port. Port Perry eliminated them last year in the opening round. They must conclude the round by February 8. Another interesting match will be the Midget A's best of five, which starts January 29 in Port. Port has beaten Uxbridge twice this year but the last time was a 1-0 shut- out by Clay Lovering. Uxbridge also holds season H) § wins over the Menzies ree om ES \ Pacers. The strong PeeWee A Legionnaires start another , best of five round on January 28 at home to Uxbridge. Port has the extra game in this series because of the higher placing in the Lakeshore league. They nipped Ux- bridge 3-2 this past Saturday in the opening game of the Port Perry tournament. The most violent series looms as the Juveniles get together. Port Perry has earned the extra game and open at home on February 1 at8 p.m. The last time these two teams met, Port winger Joe Williams was attacked by the Uxbridge goaltender and the game was stopped early to prevent further fighting. The meeting got off to a rousing start when Mr. Grimshaw criticized the contact men for not handing in the official game sheets frequently enough. he said that approximately 5,600 games had taken place since the beginning of the season in his district alone. He was upset that the boxes placed '5 3 I J eb | AOE TLE sy PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., January 28, 1981 -- 13 Port Perry vs Uxbridge open play-off games in referee's rooms around the province hadn't been more successful. He sugges- ted that, as an alternative, the local associations could send in overview master sheets with all the scores of games played on them. That motion was made by Port's Grant Williams and was carried. There was also some classification of teams for next year discussed and a couple of league re-align- ment changes brought up. The new A team league that was brought up would have very little effect on Port Perry A teams because they would still be playing the same teams. There was only a momen- tary reminder voiced by Mr. Grimshaw regarding teams going to Europe and others hosting teams here for the coming season. Jr. Ringettes defeat Ajax by Pat Armstrong January 5th, the Ives Florist Juniors got off to a fine start in the new year. The girls beat Ajax on their home ice for a final score of 43. Janice Jackman and Diane McDougall each chalked up a single goal with the assists going to Julie Abraham and Michelle Newelle. Kelly Raines whipped in one beautiful un- assisted and one assisted by Cathy Armstrong. This past weekend the Ives Florist Juniors were busy both days. Saturday saw Port against the Oshawa B team losing by a 4-2 score. Janice Jackman managed to slip in one unassisted goal and an assist on Michelle Newelle's goal. Sunday's game in Oshawa saw our girls short handed due to illness. Although every player put forth her best effort, Port lost 7-2. Janice Jackman and Kelly Raines both played excellent games and chalked up the two goals. They were assist- ed by the hard working Michelle Newelle and Tish Le Fort.
