Mr. Pearse said that watches were one of the most popular items as gifts this Christmas, but the high price of gold seemed to be scaring off buyers for jewellery pieces with high content of the precious metal. Greg Heffering of Gre- gory's Mens Wear in the Port Perry Plaza told the Star that most mens clothing stores in Ontario experien- ced a loss of sales generally during 1980. He said that December, 1980, was not as brisk for him as the previous year, but "I'm not disappointed at the way things turned out." Mr. Heffering said that one trend he noticed this Christ- mas was that women were not buying the 'big ticket" items like suits and sport jackets and slacks for their husbands or boy-friends the way they have in years past. He also said that buyers were paying cash for their purchases rather than using their credit cards which could be a reflection of the high interest rates for credit. In fact, he said that credit card buying was off by about half of what it was the previous year. Chic Carnegie of Home- stead Furniture on Highway 7A called the month an "average December." Micro-wave ovens were very popular as gifts this Christmas, he said, and for some brands, demand created short supplies. Howard Hall, of House of Howard on Queen Street, had similar comments. '""Generally speaking, December turned out to be a pleasant surprise as far as volume is concerned," he stated. "I'm satisfied with the way things went, considering the economic conditions and so on," said Mr. Hall who is president of the Scugog Chamber of Commerce. As an indication of some of the peculiarities of consumer buying patterns, Mr. Hall noticed that credit card purchases did not decline this December - despite the high interest rates. ° Despite the fact that most merchants expressed satis- faction with the sales volumes during the Christ- mas season, several pointed out that profit margins may _ bereduced this year because "of increasing costs. "Sure I'm happy with the volume, but I won't know what my profits are until all the bills are in," said one.
