Port Perry entries were disappointments, winning only one game in the four they played. The B team was the doormat of the eight teams entered as it lost 11-0 to Oak Ridges and 17-0 to Lakefield. The A squad dropped a 5-4 squeaker to Lakefield and were shutout 2-0 by the Canadians in the first game. The all-Oshawa champion- ship was surprisingly one- sided as it figured to be more competitive considering the Canadiens' blanking of the home team. It was evident in the last half of the mismatch that the Cana- "diens had given up on their -- chances for victory and had become increasingly frustrated. There was a couple of minor scrapes in "the last period and the Cana- diens just rolled over and died as JacketMan scored three goals in the last 1:43. The third period was the only one that -JacketMan embarassed their opponents in, scoring five times to eliminate any doubt as to the eventual outcome. But through the first two periods, the championship was any- thing but secure for them as they led 2-0 after the first period and 3-1 at the end of the second. Payne scored the first two goals without benefit of assists as the strong skating left winger got the first after a rush down his flank and the second on-a-slap-shot from the slot on a three-on-one. Glen Madden made it 3-0 with 2:20 left in the second period when he popped in a wrist shot off a centering pass from Dan Morton. Goaltender Ken Passfield maintained that lead when he robbed a Canadien with a superlative glove save on a last minute breakaway. But Passfield was hurt on the play and came out, never to return. His replacement, Brian Lansfield, was scored upon for the only time on the first shot against him with 33 seconds left in the period. But the Canadiens failed to take advantage of the back hand and then Patton struck on a power play. Patton scored on a centering pass in front of the net and then Attersley fired in a slap shot with three seconds left. The consolation game was more entertaining as Ron Pearson and Port Perry Menzies Pacer's John Vaz matched two goal perfor- mances. But Lakefield hung on for a 5-4 win despite a three goal comeback bid. Lakefield led 5-1 after Doug Coyle stole the puck from Paul Storry and side- stepped defenceman Keith Trembley to score with 2:20 left in the second ten minute period. But the Pacers came back with a pair of goals before the second period ended. with John Ridpatch sitting out a double minor, Jamie Lane scored from the side of the net, and then Vaz was given credit for a goal that "Scott Wallace appeared to" score with less than a minute to go. Vaz and Storry work- ed for the puck along the boards, getting it in front to Wallace, who fired it in one motion. Both goals came with Ridpath off the ice. He is best remembered as a talen- ted, but penalty prone defenceman, from the thrill- ing Lakefield-Port Perry Bantam A encounter from the semi-finals last spring. The consolation game was not without controversy as Port had a goal called back on another power play, this time in the last frame, after the whistle had blown the play dead in the Lakefield zone. Kevin Long made the game tense for the last 59 seconds when he set up Storry- for the fourth Port goal. Storry flipped in a high shot with goaltender Ken Harman out of the net. Inthe final last ditch effort, Port lined up five men in front of "often comes from scoring in the last minute of a period and JacketMan rallied in the third. All five of the goals _came_ with less than six minutes to play. Patton got his first with 5:33 left and then Craig Bailey easily outskated the Canadiens and then scored on a break-away deke. Kevin Gilders, and Mike Burke had the other Lake- field markers. Pearson scored his while Port was down two skaters following penalties to Sean Fewer and winger Darren McKenzie. Gilders struck off a second period face-off to Clay Lovering"s left and then Burke netted the third goal when Wallace was off for boarding. It was at that time that Port Perry defence was having trouble clearing the front of the net, causing congestion first in front of Lovering and then on Harman. Port Perry played the game without its usual complement of Bantam age players, mainly Steve Lee, Vaughan McKee, and Jeff Johnstone, who did not dress because of some complaints registered by the parents of the Midget age players about their amount of ice time. Port's first effort was the uninspired loss to the Cana- diens as Russ Roy and Kevin Pasco had a goal and assist each to take care of the visitors scoring. Roy broke the ice 12 seconds into the second period off a face-off in Port's end and Pascoe got the insurance goal at 1:54 of the third period after Fewer had stopped the first shot in his skates. The best play by any Port Perry Pacer came in the first period when defence- man Kevin Trapp, who forms the team's best rear- guard formation with Todd Blayone, made a diving poke check on a break away in the last minute of play.
