But the prices for this year's stickers could be considered a bargain, as the Ontario government has frozen the fees for various licences at last year's levels. Stickers and plates went on sale at various Ministry of Transportation and Communication (MTC) outlets on December 1 and motorists have until the end of February to renew them. Passenger car fees for licences are: four cylinders or less - $30.; five or six cylinders - $45; and seven or more cylinders will cost $60. For the first time, this year motorcycles will be issued a sticker rather than new plates and these are priced at $20. Trailers will cost you $25, while a snow- mobile is only $10. As usual, MTC report that plate and sticker purchases are not brisk at this time, as most people wait until the deadline before buying them. But if you don't want to get caught in that long line-up on Saturday, February 28 - you would be wise to act now. The MTC office in Port Perry is at 14 Water Street in the plaza at the corner of 7A Highway and Water Street. Look for alternate site (From page 1) board insists be covered. But councillor Espey said, "We don't need to get into dollars and cents at this point. I think we should go along with the library board's request to form a joint committee." But Mayor Taylor reiter- ated "we need to give some commitment, although it can not be open ended. Why set up a committee only to turn them down because they need $80,000 or so to buy a new property when they come back with a recom- mendation." At least three councillors ~-voiced their objection --to spending any money on an alternate site. Councillors Wolters, Malcolm and Williams all said they would not be prepared to spend additional taxpayers money on another site. Councillor Wolters said, "We can't afford to buy a new property, but we don't need to look all over town. We have two properties now, the old library site and the old arena site. Let's take another look at these two possibilities." Councillor Williams dis- agreed. "The old arena and library sites have already been considered. We have a property now for a library, and the only place for a library is the newly zoned Water Street site. I cannot support any new motion to purchase additional proper- ty for this purpose," he said. Mayor Taylor added, "the taxpayers want the best value for their money and presently it is the location on 'Water Street, since the property is already owned by the municipality and is now zoned for library use only." When asked by councillor Waterfront site not out (From page 1) this council will co-operate on any other suitable site, recognizing the fact that the Scugog Library Board may purchase or attempt to expropriate any site it chooses, whether public or private. An amendment to delete all mention of the former Lake Scugog Lumber property, and that the site would no longer be available for a library was opposed by councillors Malcolm™ and Wolters, but carried by a 5-2 vote. Mayor Jerry Taylor concluded by saying 'the way the new resolution reads, it does not rule out the possibility of using the lake- front property for the new library." Espey if the library board would be prepared to look at alternate sit without a commitment from council, Dr. Cottrell said that they would prefer to have the costing included, but if the only way to get the 1] rolling is without it, would go along without the commitment. But Dr. Cottrell made it very clear to council that the library board is inflexible about an addition. to the present library. 'There are too many negatives on this site and the board does not want to waste any more time discussing it. We are violent- -ly opposed to any-addition.on- the present building," he said. To the question whether the library board would consider-a smaller building, Dr. Cottrell suggested that Reg Rose to seek P.C. nomination (From page 1) ly the president of the Durham-Northumberland riding Conservative party. In an interview with the Star on Monday morning, Mr. Rose said he had been considering the move to provincial politics for many years. . "I guess I first thought about it when former MPP Dr. M.B. Dymond of Port Perry resigned," he said. Mr. Rose has been a resi- dent of Port Perry for the past Sixteen years and has been actively involved in various campaigns at both the Provincial and Federal levels during that time. He The one you're loo ALL LINES OF GENERAL INSURANCE they they could be flexible here, but it would only be for minor alterations. This week members of the joint committee will be look- ing at alternate sites for the new library, and it is their hope that at the January 5 meeting of council they will have either one or two pos- sible sites to recommend to council. In the meantime, council voted unanimously - to support the library board in the request for an additional extension of the Wintario grant. Mayor Taylor concluded by saying that he hopes council is- not snowing -the:- -- Library Board. With his announcement, Mr. Rose brings the declared candidates count to two interested in seeking the seat currently held by York- Durham MPP Bill Newman who announced over a year ago that he would not be seeking re-election this year.
