IETS Regi Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor did the honours during the opening ceremonies, dropping the puck to start the game between Sweden and Port Perry. national anthem. Pacers win (From page 14) of the first period. Soden- berg bested Clay Lovering with a weak, rolling back- hander with 46 seconds left and then Ult Henburg scored on a two man break away with a wrist shot. Fewer got that goal back in the second period and Lee added his while the visitors were shut out. Obviously showing the effects of a tiring trip (over 30 hours), the Swedes slowed down the blazing pace in the third period, allowing Long to score twice. One Lund player said "we tired after flight" as he skated off at the end of the game. Long scored on a high shot with 7:15 left to give Port a one goal lead for the fourth time in the game. He scored the insurance goal when he flipped in a rebound during a goal mouth scramble with 1:19 to go. If the Lund team hadn't tired in the last ten minutes the estimated 1,000 fans would have seen a different ending. In all, the game was played at a very fast pace and it was evident that one team had to give out sooner or later. As Mayor Taylor pointed out at the banquet, they will be tough to beat as soon as they get acclimated to the country and get more rest. The game was the third international win for a Port Perry team against no losses. They beat Switzer- land in 1973 and Haninge, Sweden last year, also as midgets. Two Port Perry players held the Swedish flag aloft during the playing of their The Swedish and Canadian National anthems, were played flawlessly on the trumpets by these two gentlemen. ® WH TT JUNIOR 'C' HOCKEY Scugog Arena - Port Perry - Ontario THURS., JANUARY 1st - 1:30 P.M. Inits most recent game they tied Larocque 1-1 in a game they deserved to win. Two days earlier Brian's had a surpri- sing come from behind win over Utica. Utica dug its third place hole deeper with a 3-0 loss to second place Blackstock, while C & B routinely handled Emmer- son 4-1. Bill Fielding broke a score- less tie when his shot from the point beat Larocque goaltender Kevin Beer just before the buzzer sounded to end the second period. Larocque was fortunate to salvage the tie as Brians took the command in the final frame. Some good, acrobatic saves by Beer kept them in the game, especially during an elbowing penalty to Rick Olaison. The game was very rare in that there were more goals disallowed than those that counted. Brian's had a pair of markers nullified in the second period and another in the third while Larocque had one called back in the second. Danny McKee scored a - goal that did count with 2:10 left on a rebound in the slot after a shot from teammate ---~== Chester Downs with 2:10 left. Bill Peeters of Brians squared off "against Kevin Martens to conclude the game in the last minute of play. Because it remained so close all the way, there were a few rough moments in the opening game on the Sunday afternoon card. A pair of goals by Ron Short meant the downfall of the Utica Plow Jockeys as Blackstock took the lead and utilized a strong backcheck- ing defense to maintain it. Wayne McGuigan beat Utica goaler Don Card on a power play at 6:40 of the first period on a screened shot from the boards to open the scoring. Utica Coach Dennis Syms called a time out and went over to talk with the goaltender. The PPBA allows each team one time out during a contest, similar to the National Hockey League. Usually they are taken near the end of the game in important situations and the players always congregate to their own bench. Rarely will a coach use it as early as Syms did or go right out onto the ice to speak with the goalie. Dave Dalton set up Short's first goal as he rushed down the right wing and fired on the net. Short was right in front and redirected it in to give Blackstock a 2-0 lead at the end of the period. Short struck again with 3:29 to go in the second period to wrap up the scoring. Utica had one goal called off and they objected strenuously. Zz 4 TROPHIES? and ENGRAVING DO-NO's! CORD, CRAFT & HOBBY WOR! ORT PERRY PLAZA - 32528308 //. ---- NE Ves stn wy ay, ad i Lb C & B's win over Emmer- son was their usually effi- cient, unspectacular winning effort. Emmerson got off to a quick start as Bart Wagar scored six minutes into the contegbut C & B controlled it from there on. C & B controlled the tempo of play after the Wagar goal but they had very few good chances until Mark Lee scored on a rebound at the edge of the crease after Ron Redman and Ken! Fraser took shots at Rick Arsenault. Fraser set up the second goal, by Robert Evans, with a crisp forward pass that the speedy forward tucked in under the cross bar. Evans is the most complete player in the league and undoubted- ly its quickest runner. There are few players who can keep up with him, including teammate Lee and Utica's Mike Mitchell. Wagar took an interfer- ence penalty that allowed Tim Ashbridge to score on Bill Bridge's rebound with 7:01 left in the middle period, making it 3-1. Bruce Woodrow concluded the scoring with 5:34 remain- ing in the final period after a pin point pass from the slot by Larry Page. Woodrow, situated at the corner of the net, flipped it by Arsenault. Like the first game, this one ended with a wrestling match. In a shoddy display of officiating, both referees saw that Redman was strain- ing to get at John Gerber but did nothing for several moments. In fact, Redman had been restrained by teammate Bill St. John only. When he finally did get to Gerber the pair remained interlocked on the ice for a lengthy period before they were separated. After they got up, the players ex- changed holiday greetings while the officials stood by. Big Novice victories Bowmanville 10-2 Nobleton 6-0 The Port Perry Pearce Auctioneers added a pair of wins on the weekend to _stretch their streak to 11.in a row, defeating Nobleton 6-0, and Bowmanville 10-2. Inthe match-up Friday night, the team was ready for Nobleton, having been de- feated 8-4 in the last meeting. Eric Grosvenor got on the ball scoring at 3:20 of the first period, on an unassisted effort. Two minutes later, Jeff Mills scored from Jerett Harman. Jeff came back early in the second period, scoring unassisted on a breakaway. Clair Cornish found the mark at the mid- point of the period, taking a pass from Scott Menzies. The Auctioneers scored twice more in the third period. Clair shot one high after one of his well-known super charged skates from end to end, then Jarett finish- ed the scoring with 32 seconds remaining, Adam Cummings being awarded the assist. This game was a fine effort by all the Auctio- neers. On Saturday, the team travelled to Bowmanville. Upon arrival, they found that their 1:00 p.m. scheduled game was not to be played until 3:00 p.m. This made little difference, however, as they blasted the Bowman- ville squad 10-2. Port scored twice in the first period, on goals by Adam Cummings, from Jeff Mills and Danny Maw, then Clair Cornish, unassisted. Bowmanville beat Ryan Larocca early in the second period, then back and scored three more. Goals went to Jarett Harman with two, and Jeff Mills with a single, assists going to Eric Grosvenor, Adam Cum- mings, Michael Brett and Michael Feasby. Clair Cornish scored his second of the afternoon, unassisted, at 1:55 of the third period. Bowmanville got one more, before Port got the final four of the game. Jeff Mills scored twice for his hat trick, Jarett Harman once for his hat trick, and Chris Larocca netted one. Assists went to Michael Feasby, Danny Maw and Doug Adams. The coaches extend Season's Greetings to all the Auctio- neers and their families, and also congratulate the boys on a very impressive season to date. Perfect HEATING CO. LTD. 24 Hr.
