Atoms celebrate Christmas with families following 4-3 victory over Bowmanville by Val Menzies On Friday, December 19, Port Perry Malmont Farm Atom All Stars hosted the Atom entry from Bowman - ville. The last time these two teams met they played to a draw. Once again fans were treated to a fine display of hockey. This time, thanks to a three goal effort from Brad Menzies and -an- all- around team effort, Port defeated Bowmanville 4-3. The visitors came out strong and opened the scoring with less than a minute gone in the first period. Brad Menzies got his first unassisted goal a minute later. With 1:12 left in the first period, Mark Barkey put Malmont ahead, assisted by Brad Menzies and Robbie Jamieson. Bowmanville got the lone goal in the second period to tie the game at 2-2. Brad Menzies put Port Perry ahead in the third with another unassisted effort. The determined Bowman- 74 > RSET wy Hs LM A CRN NR SE RES ville team 'again tied the score at the 10:45 mark. Brad Menzies put Port Perry in the lead to stay with his third unassisted goal at 9:15. The see-saw battle was highlighted with great goal- tending and missed oppor- tunities at both ends. The Green Machine is idle' until January 3 when they travel to Bracebridge for a tournament. Their next home game is Friday January 9 when they host their arch rivals, Uxbridge. This should be a good game since Port is out for revenge after taking a beating at the hands of Uxbridge at their last meeting. After the game the boys and their families had a Christmas party at the home of Jim and Madelaine Leatherdale. Gifts of green underwear, undershirts and socks were presented to coaches Dave Barkey, Dave Ballingall and manager Bob Jamieson. The trio then had to guess which boy made 7 what comment written by each of the team members about their coaches. Their success rate was not over- whelming but it was great fun. Lunch was provided by the mothers, then the boys were presented with their gifts with Dave Ballingall filling in for Santa. Thanks -to Madelaine Leatherdale, Sandy ,Sorley and Lenore Traves, the coaches and boys now have matching a Swedish team during a game at the arena Saturday evening. Green Machine crocheted hats and small knitted toques with their numbers on them. Hats were also presented to sponsors Neil and Noreen Malcolm who were gracious enough to attend. The Malcolms not only lend their money and name to sponsor the team but- also> their support and time to cheer the boys on. Neil and Noreen also gave out Malmont Farm pens to In a well-played, the team members & bottle openers to the parents. Bob Jamieson handed out Christ- mas Cards and complimen- tary tickets to the Midgets vs. Sweden game to the team. Malmont Farm team would like to thank the Leatherdales for opening their home to us and to Delphine Brown for organi- zing the party. It was a great success. Port Hope went down to defeat 6-3, as Bowmanville also bit the dust by a score of 11-6. On Monday, December 15, the Pee Wees (travelled to Port Hope. It was the first game for the Swedish team who arrived in Canada less than 24 hours earlier. They were wearing green and red uni; forms with the letters ABV printed boldly on the back of the jerseys. Inthe pre-game ceremony, they gave Port Perry boys golf caps with the team colours and the large red crest on the front. The Swedes will be housed .in Lindsay during their stay and are one of three Euro- Durham Region. There is a Denmark Bantam team in Uxbridge and a Czechosla- vakian Juvenile team in Oshawa. ~The overseas visitors were hosted at a banquet at the Latcham Centre following the game and were given medallions from the people of the township of Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor. A Lund team representative also gave a brief speech of thanks after the dinner. There - were very few empty seats at the game and all the seats at the banquet were taken. Jan Franssen, who organized the whole show, called the game turn- out "very gratifying" for the - Port Perry Minor Hockey Association. Before the game OMHA representatives Tom Keeble and Ed Grimshaw were introduced along with Mayor Taylor. In spite .;of this list of luminaries the night belonged to Long. Both the Canadian and Swedish national anthem were played by two men with trumpets at- center ice and Port Perry Captain Blayone and Assistant Captain Paul Storry held the Swedish flag during that playing. Blayone also took the opening face-off from Mayor Taylor. Blayone started the scoring in the fast paced contest at 6:43 on a rebound off shots by Long and Kevin Trapp. Dennis Sodenberg got the first of his pair of goals on a power play with Sean Fewer off for unneccessary rough- ness. Sodenberg scored from the slot after a pass from behind the net from Patrik Dalholm. It occurred with ten seconds left to serve on Fewer's penalty. Long scored his first goal on a beautiful play as he rushed down the right wing, around the defence and fired past goaltender Patrick Hanssen to restore the lead.
