Planners for Durham Region have recommended that the hamlet of Seagrave undergo slow residential growth over the next several years, and that any new growth in the community be closely monitored to insure that it doesn't have an adverse affect on water supplies to existing homes. Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor was return- ed to office, but councillors Jerry Jackman and Richard Drew went down to defeat. In the race for Regional council Lawrence Malcolm defeated Jerry Jackman and Robert Espey defeated Richard Drew for a Scugog council seat. Don Crosier defeated Ruth Mark for the area council seat, Neil Hunter won the seat in Ward 1 over Val Lovering and Paul Saulnier. Presbyterian minister Stuart McEntyre won the seat on Durham Board of Education. The Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) has ruled in favour of the proposed water- front location for a new Scugog War Memorial Library building. A Cartwright area resident reports that closed its doors and ceased operation on September 30. the family pet Samoyed dog was shot last week. This is the fourth reported case of pets being shot in the Cartwright area. The three-day shot guns only deer hunt in this area concluded last Wednesday, and a spokesman for the Ministry of Natural Resources says there were fewer hunters than last year. OCTOBER - Honey, a year old Siamese cat may have saved the life of two-year old Esther Mortimer, of R.R. 4 Port Perry, when fire broke out at the family's farm-house. The cat alerted Mrs. Mortimer who rescued Esther from the upstairs bedroom as flames were breaking through the floor. DECEMBER Scugog Township council has given tentative approval to a suggestion from two Port Perry teenagers, David Irvine and Keith Geer to build an open air skating rink on the site of the old Port Perry Arena. Breaking from tradition the new Scugog Township council used the inaugural meet- ing to pass a by-law which rescinds the action taken one week earlier by the out-going council to re-confirm its financial support and the Water Street location for a new library building.
