SE ------------------ About 75 ratepayers turned out at the Greenbank Hall last Thursday night for the all-candidates meet- ing sponsored by the Scugog Ratepayers Association, and the question and answer period was lively. Seated at front are Ward Four candidate John Wolters who's back in by acclamation, and Ward Two hopefuls "Twoinracefor school board A Scugog candidate for the Durham Board of Education says that French Immersion is unnecessary in this area. * Charles Sharpe, a retired G.M. employee who lives in Caesarea, 'told 'two 'all- candidates meetings 'in @Greenbank and Blackstock last week that his reasons for opposing French Immersion oo are the costs and the fact that less than one per cent of people in Durham speak French as a first language. Mr. Sharpe also told the - . meetings that he is opposed to what he termed '"'student enrichment" programs, which he said may be set up for gifted students under legislation now being draf- ted Mr. Sharpe's opponent in the race for the single Scugog seat on the Board of Education is Rev. Stuart McEntyre, a minister at St. John's Presbyterian Church in Port Perry. Rev. McEntyre's message to the voters at both all- candidates meetings has been the need to bring the schools and the community closer together, and to provide students with -the< chance to broaden their horizons by using resources in the community. J He said there is a need for an on-going vehicle for parents and teachers "to help reach a better under- standing." sd Calling the teaching profession "'very demand- ing" he said that teachers "deserve our utmost sup- port." Rev. McEntyre has been minister in Port Perry for the past seven years, and was a school teacher in Ontario before entering the ministry 15 years ago. _ He said "it's a tough world for young people these days, and they need the finest education possible." He-said-he is willing to accept the responsibilities as trustee, and pledged to listen to the people and take their concerns to the Board. He has a son in high school in Port Perry. Mr. Sharpe has six child- ren, and he told his audience in Greenbank last Thursday night that because his own education was interrupted by the war, he envies the schooling that young people can receive these days. He also said that the "youth deserve all the help we can give them." The issue of French Immersion has been raised in Scugog with efforts by a group of parents to bring this to the area. There is a public meeting --slated for Port Perry later this fall on the topic. At present, French Immersion is available at three schools in Durham: Oshawa, Pickering and Uxbridge which began its program this fall. The topic of sex education in the school system, which is a hot issue this election in Brock Township to the north of Scugog, was not raised at either of the all-candidates meetings in Blackstock or Greenbank. There appears to be many people in Scugog Township who don't fully understand the Ward system of local government, and the various seats 'on Scugog council. Here's a breakdown. All voters in Scugog Town- ship cast ballots for the following positions: mayor, who automatically has a seat on ~the Durham Region council; regional councillor, who sits on both the Scugog council and Durham Region council; and area councillor (or councillor at large) who sits only on the Scugog council. The Township is broken down into four wards, with voters in each ward electing one representative who sits on local council. Ward One is made up of the former Township of Reach. Ward Two takes in all of Port Perry. Ward + Three covers Scugog Island, and Ward Four is the former Township of Cartwright. Persons living in Ward One do not vote for the ward councillors in the other three wards and so on. All Scugog citizens vote for the one trustee to sit on the Durham Board of Education. One final reminder: election day is November 10 with the polls open from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Vote light Voting at the municipal election advance poll held last Saturday was slightly lower than the advance poll held two years ago. A total of 194 ballots were cast on Saturday, compared to 222 cast in the advance poll two years ago. The advance poll was held at -the Township offices in Port Perry from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday. Election Day for Scugog residents is this coming Monday, November 10, with the polls open from 11:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. JARMAN OXFORDS $49.95 GREB HUSH PUPPY OXFORDS $29.95 NORTH STAR JOGGERS $21.95 ... $18.00 WALLPAPER Room Lots Single Roll $2.00 'Drapery Hardware Large Assortment Floor Coverings 4 yds. wide ... sq.yd. $5.95 Window Shades - 36 " $3.25- $3.95 AW.
