PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., November 5, 1980 -- 17 "Sonya comes back to nip Port Perry 4-3 by Danny Millar Both games were come- back efforts decided by one goal as the Lake Scugog #iockey League swung into its third Sunday morning. Sonya got two late goals to edge Port Perry 4-3, while Oshawa fell behind Bethany, then rallied for a 3-2 deci- jon. A For a while in the first period it looked as though there was an upset in the making as the Bethany MoHawks jumped out in front 2-0 on goals by John Burns and Phil Finney before six minutes had elap- sed But before the end of the period, Oshawa had it knot- ted on two goals that eluded goaltender Dean Jewell from almost the same spot on the left wing side. With 5:26 left to go Karel Laarakkers snapped in a shot after passes from Glen Rowe and + D. McDonald and 4:09 later Dave McKee blasted a slap shot in from the same spot. The second period was played in end to end fashion while goaltenders domina- ted. Jewell got help from teammate Pat Lynch, a defenceman, to turn back' a sure goal after a shot trick- led past him headed for the open net. Lynch quickly shovelled it aside. There was a freak play mid-way through the segment when two players were hurt on the same play, in the same zone, but at two different spots on the ice. Both got up without assis- tance. Both goaltenders, Randy Pooler at the Oshawa end and Jewell at the other, were called upon during the final 40 minutes and came up big. The only try against them that turned out successfully was on Jewell when Laarak- Pontypool Grain limited D8. 1 BETHANY Intersection Hwy. 35 & A Daily Quotations, *Quick loading & unloading eHydraulic truck dumper *2 dump pits eStorage 415,000 bu. The winning goal was scored with 6:07 remain- ing while Oshawa was play- ing shorthanded. Laarak- kers rushed down the right wing, cut in front and slipped oh past the Bethany netmin- r, The game was hard and aggressively played throughout. There were no incidents, which is more than can be said for the preceding game when Port Perry's Pierre Laberge put on a performance that earned him a game miscon- duct and gross misconduct. Late in the first game, Laberge was given a penalty for an obvious slashing infraction in his own end. He became angry and was given an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. He then threw his stick into the penalty box and was thrown out of the game. 4 BEDROOMS - FULLY DETACHED PRIVATE MASTER SUITE, MAIN FLOOR At the conclusion of the match, he skated out from the sidelines to the other side of theice and began berating the officials at the score- keeper's box. That earned him the gross misconduct and likely a suspension. The Laberge outbufst marred what had been up to that point a good game, and quite possibly cost Port its first win of the year. Up till then, Port Perry was ahead 3-2. Sonya got the tying goal with 3:29 to go and both teams down a man. De- fenceman Ted Taylor let an apparently easy slap shot go from just inside center that Port Perry - goaler Phil Stasinski, who until then was performing solidly, could not come up with. Sonya won it with 2:50 to go on a shot Stasinski didn't have a chance to block. Once again playing five aside, 4 HOMES ONLY ASK US FOR DETAILS OF THIS EXCEPTIONAL OFFER. RENT ANEW defenceman Jim Armstrong fired a slap shot that apparently Joe Delaney had deflected. Regardless of the loss, it was Port's best effort of the young season. They went ahead in the first minute of play on a goal by Bill Bridge, the first of two for last year's MoJack captain. Ken Jeff- rey drew the assist. Early in the contest, Port got excellent penalty killing, especially from Bridge, playing defence, and Mark Jobb. Sonya got on the board when Tim Silver played a ricochet off the end board and fired it past a suprised Stasinski with 8:30 to go in the second period. Bridge restored the lead when he sneaked in from the point and popped a shot past goaltender Tom Christie after forward Richie LeFort did most of the work in digging the puck out behind the net. Paul Armstrong tied it again when he managed to slip the puck through the goaltender's legs while being check at the 13:59 mark. Rick Sheehy slammed in a rebound on a blue line drive from Mike Adam that gave Port a lead for the third time with 2:26 to go.
