Midget Pacers struggle for single point by Danny Millar It was not one of the better weeks in the early stages of the Port Perry Menzies Pacers Midget A hockey season. They were outplay- ed bya powerful Lindsay squad, losing 6-1 at home, Monday, October 28, and then had to rely: on two late goals by defenceman Keith Tremblay and Todd Blayone to tie an Oshawa Little NHL team in Newcastle, Friday, October 31. The defencemen were the brightest points in the Oshawa game, Blayone and Trembley played strong games along the blueline, and Blayone especially excelled in a penalty killing role. Paul Storry and Scott Wallace were also good at killing off penalties. In fact, Storry opened the scoring for Port with a shorthanded goal after Wallace used some aggressive forechecking to get the puck to him in front of the net for a quick shot past Derrick McGraw. Port had more than its share of chances to win the game, especially in the second half when Doug Forrest moved in between the pipes in place: of McGraw. Forrest robbed Jeff Johnstone of a sure goal with nine seconds remaining when he gloved a wrist shot headed - into the upper corner. Forrest also kicked out numerous earlier attempts by Storry, Kevin Long, and - Jamie Lane as the Pacers pressed during the third period. All three periods were 20 minutes long, five minutes more than Port usually plays in a regular 2 i ELECT ROLYSIS Facial - Waxing Manicure & Pedicure THE HAIR SHOPPE 176 PERRY STREET - PORT PERRY - 985-2532 Ask for Katalin AT So ------------------ * season game. Oshawa centerman Ed White got the first of three goals off the face-off at 2:19 when he fired directly at goaler Ken Harman, who kicked out at the puck, deflecting it in. "Port Perry lost possession in its own end and Jeff Williams alertly snapped it past Harman, giving Oshawa a 2-0 lead just over _ eight minutes into the game. White struck once more before the end of the period. 193 QUEEN STREET - PORT PERRY 985-7306 The one you're lool ALL LINES OF GENERAL INSURANCE for, Kevin Long scored 38 seconds after the puck had been 'dropped to commence the second period and the marker gave Port a lift. Captain Blayone tied it with 4:30 to go on a high flip shot after the puck came off the end boards. LINDSAY GAME Storry 'got the only goal against the well disciplined Lindsay marksmen. on a back hand after Menzies did the legwork in carrying it around the net. Lindsay is a. strong fore- checking and backchecking team, a rarity to see a midget team so well drilled this early in the season. They have. strong. skaters like Brad Cormier, who scored the first. four goals, and Dale Shier provided the key stops when they were needed, which was not often. Cormier got the first one on a wrist shot through a traffic jam in: front of Harman with 3:16 remaining in the first period. He beat Harman again in the second period on a rush down the right wing, the shot trickling past the Pacer netminder. . After that tally, Lindsay _got a lift and buzzed all around the net. It paid off in Cormier's third goal, which was the high shot after Harman went down. Just over a minute later Cormier got his fourth and final effort on a second effort after Harman turned aside the first, with 5:20 to go in the middle frame.
