20 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., October 29, 1980 _Help needed for door-to-door Christmas Seal compaign Despite a good initial response, volunteers are still urgently needed to help the Port Perry Christmas Seal Campaign. For the first time in its history, Durham Region Lung Association will canvass Port Perry door-to- door instead of through the mail - a departure from tradition due mainly to escalating postal costs. The experimental canvass will begin November 24th, to run for one week, and local Committee Chairman Bill Boagey is confident that the Campaign will be successful. "People in this area have a long tradition of community service," he says. "They have always been generous in their support, and the Lung Association's work is very well known and appre- ciated locally." In its efforts to prevent, detect and alleviate all lung disease, the Association offers a wide variety of free programs and services to residents -across Durham Jesus is Coming Soon! Last May, a visiting Lung Function screening service was instituted for local business and industry. This service (which indenti- fies individuals with early signs of respiratory disease) recently tested employees at a major Port Perry plant. Eleven people at this installation were alerted to the warning signs of prob- able lung disease, and hope- fully eleven cases of lung disease have now been avoided. You can help ensure the future of this free screening service, and all other Lung Association programs by calling 985-7140 or 985-8033, and registering as an official Christmas Seal canvasser.
