i] High School soccer teams win final league games by Danny Millar ¢ Both soccer teams from \ Port Perry High School scored commanding victor- ies in LOSSA league play at home on Monday October 20. The juniors got three goals from Grant Perry in blank- ing Harwood- Roadrunners and Senior Rebels beat Har- wood 6-1. It was the final league game for both teams and the third win of the year for the seniors. Though it is still unknown, playoff - chances for both teams are apparent- ly quite good. In recent years, Port Perry was not competitive -in- the soccer field but that has changed this autumn. Until this year @ most of the attention has been focussed on high school football teams locally ' but that program has been cancelled for at least a year. The cancellation of foot- ball has been a good omen for the round ball sport. ¢ They have inherited Mike ELECT PAULE. * SAULNIER _ "for COUNCILLOR -WARD 1 - Barton, the leading scorer, and Ed Raffin, both former footballers. Barton got the -- goal in the Rebels walkover on a neat sliding kick that he just managed to get his foot on and redirect into the corner of the net. Rob Huggins laid the groundwork for the goal with an excellent cross field pass. Sean Twomey scored the first Rebel goal on a high kick from the right corner that kept on sailing over everybodies head--including the Harwood's goalkeeper. ¥eith McKinnon scored the chird goal of the opening half after a rush down field. Port Perry got a fluke goal early in the second period that was credited to Huggins. It came off a corner kick that one of the Harwood defenders knocked into his own net with his head, making it 4-0. Rebel netminder Alf Hugg- ins made a circus save following the fourth goal. He reached high over his head to come up with the stop and then had to reach behind him to retrieve the ball in the air after it rolled off his finger- tips. Harwood got its only goal mid-way through the half when Port defenders Jon Howell and Kurt Roane collided with Huggins and knocked him over, giving the visitors an open net to shoot at. Ken Huggins added a pair of goals and Vaughn McKee and Ray Meisner had one each in the Junior Rebs win. The win comes on the heels of last week's close loss to the well disciplined Ajax Rams. The juniors played well in that contest but could not pull it off. Their recent performances have been gradually improving bring- ing credibility to the possibil- ity of a playoff upset. The Seniors also will enter the elimination rounds as dark horse contenders capable of pulling off a surprise. Jr. Ringettes tie Oshawa by Pat Armstrong Getting off to a very good start, the -Ive's Florists Junior Ringette team held their own right up to the last ten seconds of the game. Up to this time it was a tie, but the winning went to Oshawa. Janice Jackman led off the Port girls by getting two unassisted goals and one assisted by Kelly Raines. Because Janice was playing such a good game she also got an assist on Kelly Raines' goal. Also getting off to a good start is Michelle Newell, who got an unassist- ed goal. All the travelling teams from Port competed in that. circuit this season and local representatives were very upset at what they felt were unjustified spiral- ling costs. Cathy managed to put in one unassisted goal. With the final score being 6-5 for Oshawa, it certainly shows the Port girls have lots of talent and with a bit of practice, they'll be right up there as number one. This year's Junior players are: Tish Lefort, Allison Michell, Janice Jackman, Kelly Raines, Michelle Newell, Lisa Canning, Julie Abraham, Diane McDougall, Jill Kendall and Stephanie Butt. president reversed. York-Durham President . Paul Torkoff rebuffed their attempts so the suggestion to form a rival loop came up them. The convenors of the younger categories will be contacting area members to sée if there is support for a new league. This meeting concludes what President Cooper called a very successful season. + Served on School Board for many years * Township Resident for 50 years * Concerned Ratepayer * Dedicated Councillor ALWAYS READY TO HELP BRING ABOUT A GOOD RELATIONSHIP WITHIN AND OUT OF THE TOWNSHIP. | would appreciate your help.
