16 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., October 29, 1980 Robert Cooper re- elected president of P.P.D.M.S.A. by Danny Millar Robert Cooper was re- elected President of the Port Perry and District Minor Softball Association for the second year, at a General Meeting held at Conway Gardens on Sunday, October 25. Cooper, who served as head man last season, beat out veterans Vin Walker and Jack Cooke Jr. for the office. He admitted he was not 'surprised over the verdict. He also said it was "a hard position, not too many people want it." Mr. Cooper called the midget Elimination tourna- ment held here this past "summer the season's biggest .success. He termed it '"A-1", saying "the work that went «into it was just super." What about next year? Old-timers 'fourney champions by John ""Beachey" Vernon Howard Forder Realtors -won the Milbrook Old Timers tournament on Thursday October 16th. The Realtors played the first game of the tournament against Newcastle. It turned "out to be a very close game with Port Perry winning by a score of 3-2. Game two was played Sat- urday morning ~ against Burlington. Apparently Bur- lington left their game on the skyway, Port Perry winning this game by a score of 4 to 1. Game three was played Saturday night against War- saw. This was the roughest game of the tournament with Port Perry keeping cool and the game ended in a 2-2 tie, putting Port Perry into the finals on Sunday afternoon. "On Sunday afternoon the Realtors went out with their new uniforms and renewed enthusiasm and played a well disciplined © game against a well balanced team from Otonabee. This game went down to the last minute before Port Perry scored to win it 2-1 to win the Norris Division. "The lights (on the old diamond) are going to be our main goal....They'll definite- ly be up next.year." The lights have been ordered and will be put on the poles before 1980 is history. It was said at the meeting, the groundwork and wiring for them will be done next spring. At the last meeting held a month ago, Mr. Cooper and others made no secret about the fact that they were disappointed in the partici- pation of the parents from the season past. He noted that this would be an area of improvement he and' his workers would strive for. They will be concerned with giving the young ball players "a heckuva good time!" Wayne Venning was re- elected as well to his post as First Vice-President. He was the main man in organi- zing the midget tourney, serving as its co-ordinator. He edged out Kevin Walker and Gary McHugh in this election. A third returnee is Bonnie ~Solomon;:-who repeats: as Secretary. She won over Vin Walker and George Legeres. Jack Cooke Jr. is the final executive officer who was successful in a re-election bid as he defeated Legieres and McHugh. The Board of Directors will consist of Don Mitchell, Bill Fewer, McHugh, Legieres, Paul Solomon, Dave Crawford, Murray Parliament, Kevin Walker, Bob Knapp, Glenys Windsor and Garry Venning. Preparations for next year's Ontario Amateur Soft- ball Association convention were discussed at the meet- ing as well. It is being held in Peterborough next spring and the PPDMSA is helping run it. The local association will be sending a 10-12 member committee down to Peterborough next weekend to check on preparations for the gathering. One other major matter discussed was the possibility of Port Perry forming its own competitive softball leagues with other neigh- bouring towns instead of (Turn to page 17) Bantams B tie Sunderland by Danny Millar Port Perry Canadian Tire Bantam B's and Sunderland got their hockey season off to a less than spectacular start as the two teams played to a 3-3 tie at Port Perry Wednesday, October 22. There was no scoring until the 2:46 mark of the second period when Sunderland's Rob Marshall directed a slow shot into the Port Perry net just as Port tripping penalty had expired. Port Perry tied it up 2:10 later when Darren Cearns scored on a breakaway after the Sunderland goaltender went down and Cearns fired ina low shot to his stick side. Cearns formed a potent trio with Dean Haugen and Robbie Tobin as all three were in on the first two goals, both scored by Cearns. Darrell Musselman got the other goal. Marshall got his second point of the night when he scored with 8:22 remaining in the middle session. Geard Brethour assisted on the goal that give the visiting team a 2-1 lead. Cears tied it up again early in the third period when a pass came out from the right boards off the stick of Haugen and he managed to redirect it between the pipes. Port Perry went ahead for the first time in the contest at 3:21 Musselman's tally but Sunderland counted with one by Reg Fonz 2:02 later on a shot from the corner. A team of boys from R.H. Cornish Public School came home winners of the D.E.A.A. elementary school central soccer tournament held in Goodwood on Tuesday, October 21.
