FARR BON MAREE BR TSE LAS PESTS aN A FASILE PUAN TORR OCR RO THORN YS SAAS SX ey 14 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., October 29, 1980 Midgets edge Cannington by Danny Millar Right winger Stan Glass Jr. just happened to be in the right place at the right time and the result was a two goal night for the lumbering forward as Port Perry Ball Motor Bronco's Midget B's edged Cannington 3-2 to win their opening game of anoth- er hockey season. Glass got the ultimate tying and winning goals, one in each of the last two periods. The second goal by the Broncos came at 9:44 of the second period when Glass lofted a flip shot into the top of the net from directly in front after taking a pass from Grant Vizely, giving Port a 2-1 lead. Al Jones scored a textbook goal with just 32 seconds left in the first period when he broke down the middle of the ice and knocked in a pass from winger Steve De Haas. Cannington tied it up with Tim Bouwmeester in the penalty box for tripping at 2:34, just 11 seconds after the infraction was assessed. Jeff Brichard fired in a slap shot from the blue line to tie it up. Glass put the Broncos up 3-1 when he was cruising in front of the net and was spotted by De Haas who hit him with a pass to earn his second assist of the game. Glass slapped it in. Cannington drew to within a goal when Glen McClure beat goalkeeper Jerry Jack- man Jr. with a long range slap shot after he broke out of the Cannington end when a clearing pass tipped off defenceman Boumeester's stick at the blue line. Port Perry received solid goaltending throughout, from Pete Christie in the first two periods and Jack- man in the third. They dressed three netminders for the game. Matt Grant was the odd man out and was relegated to bench warming duties. For the first two periods it was a close checking, goalie dominated encounter as key stops at both ends of the rink kept a 0-0 deadlock intact. It opened up in the third with Mutimer pocketing his first goal at the 3:21 mark on a rush. down the right side before cutting in a slipping the puck between Pooler's legs. Less than a minute and a half later, Oshawa's Bill Demoe tied it up on a defen- sive error by Jack Lehman. Demoe turned the Sonya rear-guard inside out when he tried to play the puck instead of taking the puck carrier out of the play. Demoe went in alone and beat the Sonya netminder __cleanly with a middle height wrist shot. After Demoe got the equal- izer, Oshawa incurred a minor three minute penalty. Sonya kept the smooth skating team bottled in its own ned, similar to its successful game plan through the first 40 minutes, and applied pressure. Pool- er was ready for them each time and managed to prevent further scoring until late in the contest. "Penalties eventually hurt Sonya when Lehman was ° called for tripping with 6:50 left. Another defensive lapse inside their own end cost Sonya the tying goal as Ken Sherban was left wide open., in front of the net to take a pass from Chris Griffen which he deposited easily with 4:20 left to go. Sonya kept Oshawa at bay throughout the first two frames with a strong check- ing game, which was suc- cessful against the best pass- ing team in the league. With its offence shut down, Oshawa relied on Pooler to keep them in the game, and he did it in grand fashion. The Oshawa puck stopper was stunned and dropped to the ice late in the middle period when he did just that - thwart a Sonya slap shot that caught below the waist. The second game was also characterized by adequate goalkeeping from both sides. Andy Schewada stopped all but two Port Perry attempts while Clay Lovering was victimized five times by MoHawks shooters. Port started strongly, . trying to stave off another embarassing 8-0 loss like the one -Oshawa hung on them last week, but were even tually outgunned. Bill Glassford started it for the MoHawks with a screen-. ed shot just in front of the net at the 10:08 mark of the opening segment. Bethany held the upper hand through- out the remainder of the period with a strong fore- checking game. . Bethany went ahead 2-0 when Jim Abercrombie shoved the puck in the short side 1:04 into the second period, an unassisted effort. Port retaliated with a good passing play that made it 2-1 less than four minutes into the period. Point man Ken Jeffrey slid in a pass to Mark Jobb who relayed it to Bill Bridge inside the blue line. - Bridge put it past Schewada on a power play. The Hawks came back with a power play tally of their own when Jobb was serving a charging deten- tion. They buzzed all around the Port Perry goal for nearly a minute while Lover- ing and Bridge made good stops before Jewell finally shoved it in. Bridge, who was the best Port skater on the ice during the game, got his second goal, again on the manpower advantage, late in the period on a tip in past Schewada. That goal that made it 3-2 was as close as Port came. Bethany controlled the remainder of the match as Jewell struck again and Paul Finney bested Lovering. - - Port squandered a glorious opportunity when, down 4-2 with ten minutes left in the game, they let Bethany off the hook after they received back to back minors forcing them to play two men down for nearly two minutes. Port looked very disorganized on its attempts and almost gave up a goal when Jeffrey turned the puck over in his own end. Finney wrapped up. the scoring with 1:56 remaining when he beat Lovering on a long slap shot from the point while both teams were play- ing with four skaters. The result ruined a stand- out defensive game by Port rearguard Mike Adam who. stopped some key chances and played an aggressive contest. At the start of the second period Tim Cannon gave a good second effort when he scored from: his, knees after being checked, assists went to Jim White and Lee Wilbur.
