Council upset with * rumour of spending Members of Scugog coun- - cil were upset Monday after- ®noon when informed that a rumour has started that the Township picked up the tab for a private.dinner held at Emiel's Restaurant follow- ing "the official opening of eQueen Street last month, The dinner, attended by all members of council, senior reps from Durham Region including chairman Walter Beath, and a rep from the provincial ministry of ¢ communications, was in fact paid for totally by Hubway Construction and Totten Sims Hubicki the general contractor and consulting firm for the Queen Street reconstruction project. Scugog area councillor Jerry Jackman raised the issue at Monday's meeting of council, stating that he heard of the rumour from a private citizen. "This kind of rumour based on completely false information disturbs me," said councillor Jackman. Other members of council expressed the same concern. In addition to the members of council and senior Region- al officials, the dinner was attended by executive offi- cers from Hubway Construc- tion and Totten Sims Hubicki. Zoning by-law to standardize wards _given first reading A new comprehensive zoning by-law for the munici- pality was given formal first reading by Township council Monday afternoon. The massive document, Svhich runs well _over-.100 'pages and has been over a year in preparation, essen- tially standardizes "zoning regulations for all four wards of the Township. Although the document is '# not yet ready for circulation to the public, council has set up a series of public open houses to be held November 12, 13, 19 and 20 at the Township offices on Perry Street in Port Perry. The Open House will be ®held from 1:00 to 8:00 P.M. on each of these four days with members of the muni- cipal staff, council and a planning expert on hand to discuss details and explain just what the new by-law ¢ does for the municipality. The first reading on Monday was really just a formality to set the wheels in motion for the public information process which wil include mail circulation over the next few months. Any objections or altera- tions that cannot be worked out by Scugog council will eventually be heard by the Ontario Municipal Board, likely some time next summer. Regional councillor Reg Rose, who is chairman of Durham's planning commit- tee of council, praised the new zoning by-law Monday afternoon, calling it a "good document." All members of council agreed with this assessment, saying the new by-law will make zoning matters more manageable in the munici- pality. --and-newspaper advertising - Drivers beware of ghosts, goblins Owls hoot their warning; ghosts moan their lament; witches cackle with plea- sure; black cats dart across your path, and the leering grins of jack-o-lanterns seem to appear from every window. It's Hallowe'en! The Ontario Motor League reminds motorists that extra précautions are necessary to ensure the safety of all the little would-be ghosts, goblins and witches that are out on the prowl this special night in .search of their Hallowe'en loot. Since young masqueraders will have their thoughts on fun, not safety, the auto club cautions drivers to be especially care- ful of youngsters darting: across the street. Parents should take steps to make sure their children can see where they're going and be seen by motorists. The best time to trick or treat is while it is still light outside. If children must go out at night, they should wear light-coloured clothing, preferable outlined in reflec- tive tape, and carry a flash- light to help light their path as well as to warn oncoming motorists. Getting the trick- or-treaters to wear makeup instead of masks is another good idea. In addition, the OML urges parents to accompany child- on their walk, or arrange them to go in a group, ted home. Parents should also advise their youngsters to obey traffic signals and cross streets only at inter- sections. and sidewalks are well light- ed. The jack-o-lantern's grin may be a bright one, but it does little to light the way for anxious trick-or-treaters.
