15 Year Reunion Joel Aldred [left] of Scugog Island and Lyle Conquist of Winnipeg were both flight commanders during the last war with the RCAF 431 Bomber Squadron, and they had not seen each other for more than 15 years, until Mr. Conquist visited Scugog last week. They spent the time swapping stories and good "natured insults about who was the better pilot. Mr.. Aldred and Mr. Conquist were both awarded the DFC at the same time in 1945. The presence of a handicap- ped person in the home often presents a great strain. The aim of community based programmes is to keep the handicapped individuals out of the institutions with the result that parents keeping their family member in the much preferred home environment are subjected to much more pressure. With a normal child or adult, relatives. and friends can take care of him or her to give the families a break. However, with a develop- mentally handicapped or multiply handicapped person this is not always possible. The Durham Region Association for the Mentally Retarded have designed and are offering a relief program that has been providing a relief service to these fami- lies. The relief centres are the homes of families who will take the handicapped individuals into their home for a period ranging from 8 hours or a weekend up to three weeks a year. These relief parents have comple- ted a training course at Durham College and have volunteer experience with" the handicapped. The course is a ten week, night school course entitled, '""The Supervision and look for your windows woven woods by Kirsch Dozens of patterns and the most popular styles of the newest, most practical way to treat your windows. Ideal for use in any room. See them soon! Management of the Child with Special Needs." The course covers such areas as first aid, play and stimula- tion, growth and develop- ment, as well as behaviour management. The topics are presented by a series of guest speakers who work in the various fields. It is an accredited course at Durham College with a cost of $26.00. People who take the course are under no obli- gation to become relief parents, many take it for their own interest. Further information may be obtairied by calling Durham College or our office. Those who wish to become Parent Relief Homes are subsequently hired and paid by the Family Relief Ser- vices Programme. The handicapped. "person (child or adult) is placed in a home in his or her own community and continues his or her daily programme at school or work. The cost of this service is funded 80 per cent by the Ministry of Commun- ity and Social Services, and parents, in most cases, are expected to pay the remain- ing 20 per cent of the cost. The programme provides the parents or families of the individual concerned with a holiday and also the relief parents with a challenging -and a rewarding experience. The relief parents always decide how much relief they can provide, a few weekends a year or as much as possible STAINLESS STEEL SINKS Single or Double. It is going to be a long, cold winter for Canada with more and more pink slips and locks on the plant gates. And meanwhile, Trudeau, Bennett, Davis, Lougheed, Peckford, Levesque and the rest of them will be honking at each other just as they have for the past year. Those who can afford it will head south, not just _ "to escape the cold and snow, but a lot of hot air as well.
