During July and August, Mr. Bircham carried out investigations into 48 welfare cases in all parts of Durham Region, including Scugog Township. Many of the referrals came from members of the public' who suspected that "welfare fraud was being committed, and Mr. Johns said outside the council chambers last week that the investigator will look into all complaints lodged by members of the public from any part of the Region. ___Although_the investiga--- "tions have resulted in a gross savings of nearly $60,000 in two months, Mr. Johns cautioned members of coun- cil last week that this trend may not continue because there has been a back-log of cases up for investigation when Mr. Bircham began his work. However, Mr. Johns did say that with the word get- ting around that the Region has a full-time fraud investi- gator, there is a strong deterrent value that might never show up in a statistical report.
