In fact, a spokesman for the Durham Region Works department which operates the dump, said last week that about 10,000 tons of garbage; is going into the dump each year, or about double the' amount which might be expected from a Township with 13,000 people. Keith Middleton, a super- visor with the Region's Works department said that the 10,000 tons per year was calculated as a result of the weigh scales which the Region installed at the dump several months ago. The Region had suspected that the 23 acre site was filling up fastér than might be expected from a commun- ity of this size, and the scales confirmed this. Mr. Middleton said that one of the reasons is that commercial garbage operators from the Oshawa and Whitby area are using the dump rather than haul trash to Metro Toronto dumps since the closing of the landfill site in Whitby. At the present rate, he said, the Scugog site will probably be filled up by the "end of 1983. Scugog Township will pay Durham Region almost $40,000 this year for the operation of the dump, an NU-ECONO BRIK & STONE Fireproof, Weatherproof, durable, Decorative and Easy to Install. But because of the increased amount of garbage being dumped, the operation of the site is cost- ing Durham Region more than the revenues it collects. Mr. Middleton said that Durham Region council will probably have to make a decision in the next couple of months on whether to accept the present situation that the life-span of the site is decreasing, or have the scales there now certified and start charging a commercial per tonne rate. Also, this fall Regional council will be reviewing the rate per tonne that Scugog Township pays Durham for operation of the dump which currently is $9. Mr. Middleton said that if Regional council decides to start charging a commercial rate at the seales, the effect will probably be to decrease the volume of garbage. The volume may also be decreased as a result of an agreement worked out this week with the Central Lake Ontario Conservation Auth- ority for use of land north of Whitby as a land fill site for the next seven years at a cost of $70,000. Durham Regional Council will deal with the agreement at its meeting this week. Pine Ridge Garden by Norma Frew On Tuesday evening Octo- ber 7th, the Pine Ridge Garden Club met at the.
