The teams did not play extra innings so the final score stood at 9-9. Jeffrey got the important tally on a hit to centerfield that was booted around long enough to enable him to score. Port did not take the game very seriously. They gave Brian Dickson his first pitch- ing assignment of the season and the shortstop lasted until the fifth inning, when Kevin Walker, who had been play- ing first base, took to the mound. Port Perry put two slow footed infielders in the outer defence. Pete Christie played left field at the start and Keith Trembley occu- pied right. As expected, Durham struck early against Dickson but it wasn't really his fault. The first three batters got on with bunts, obviously taking advantage of Walker's lack of mobility around first base. John Fair hit a line drive single over 'shortstop John Butler's head to score one run. Port escaped further damage during the inning. Durham got three runs in the second inning on a hit that went right to the center- field wall, but Port came back with a pair in the fourth. The two sides exchanged fifth frame runs before Port tied it for the second time in the sixth. Durham got three runs in the top of the eighth but once again Port Perry equalled that total. Robert Franssen opened with a two base error by leftfielder Larry Graham and scored on a single through the box by Paul Van Camp. Van Camp and Bill Wanamaker both scored later when Todd Wilbur, a right-handed hitter punched an opposite field single to right field. All three of the Durham markers in the inning came as a result of two mistakes by Van Camp, then playing - Wanamaker. shortstop. With two runners on, Van Camp fielded a hit and then threw wildly past Christie, since re-located at first. On the same play Van Camp covered third and missed a high throw by All the runs came with two out. Jeffrey came in to relieve Wilbur, who pitched effec- tively as the third hurler in the game, and he shut down the Durham bats in the ninth, The leadoff man got on base on an error by Wilbur but Jeffrey struck out two and Wanamaker picked a runner off first with a snap throw from behind the plate to end the inning.
