Some people y not like me personally, or disagreebwith things we (council) have done, but the office of mayor is still important," he said. Looking back over the past two years, Mayor Taylor says that the completion of the Queen Street reconstruc- tion project in Port Perry is " probably the biggest accom- plishment for himself and the council. : He remains committed to the proposal to locate a new public library on the lake- front property, but says that the controversy that has surrounded this project and the site is a major disap- pointment for him. "I never thought I would see such a controversy over the location of a public build- ing," he said. Mayor Taylor said he is fully 'prepared to campaign this November on the library issue, but added that if the Ontario Municipal Board decides at the September hearing not to allow the library on the lakefront property, he is prepared to live with that decision and get on with the task of finding another location. "What some people- have lost sight of in the library dispute, is that the Township really does need expanded library services," he. said. The group home on Scugog Island is one. The Mayor said simply that he feels it is Mayor Jerry Taylor the responsibility of the council to provide for the needs of all Township resi- dents, and the group home for the mentally retarded was part of that responsibil- ity. Mayor Taylor said he expects that Regional council over the next two years will have to come to grips with the issue of a new Durham Regional head- quarters building. 'A new building could be a good deal for the tax- payers," hesaid. At present, four important Regional departments-finance, public works, and -planning and social services are located in various parts of Oshawa and Whitby and paying hefty rents. And he said that the present Regional building on Rossland Road in Whitby may need extensive and costly repairs over the next few years. "Getting all the depart- ments under one roof is something Regional council will have to take a careful look at in the next couple of years", he stated. Here in Scugog Township, Mayor Taylor said the new council elected in November will be faced with a two- pronged. problem of how to keep a reasonable lid on tax hikes and at the same time maintain levels of service that people are demanding. The slowdown in the over- all construction industry has hurt the Township's lot levy funds, and Mayor Taylor said that unless there is a Palmer Park Ball Diamonds New Arena Palmer Park Queen St. & Plazas Post Office Post Office Post Office _. Unless the situation improves, he says it is not likely that the new Works department garage will be built in the next two years, and he could not support any pro 1 to add a second ice pad ontq the Scugog Arena. "When the revenues slow down as they are now, there is no way we can keep spending for captial projects," he stated. He admits that he was unsure of himself at times during the first couple of months as Mayor, but says he has gained a lot of poise and confidence since then. Just who his opponent will be this November remains to be seen. Scugog's Regional council- lor Reg Rose is getting out of municipal politics at the end of this term because it inter- feres with his duties as Anglican Minister. And although no-one has stepped forward at this early date to announce his (or her) candidacy for the Mayor's position, it is almost a cert- -ainty the Mayor Taylor will not get back in by accla- mation. - Tops Swimsuits NY ay [ EN RS . . oe I AREER -- bo ay Sn Cae ~~' N od 8.
