The idea began a decade ago when the Chamber of Commerce decided it should be doing something to tie in with the Centennial Celebra- tions of the village of Port Perry. The first Western Weekend was held in June, 1970, and proved to be so popular with visitors and residents, that the Chamber of Commerce decided to make it a yearly event. The festivities have since been held each August to make sure that the throngs of cottagers who roll into the Township every summer would have a chance to be a_ part of the activities. And for those who like a little fishing action, a musky derby will give them the chance to do battle with the dean of sport fish in Lake Scugog. The derby will be held Saturday and Sunday with weigh-in at the end of each day. The cost is $10 per boat and cash prizes will be offer- ed for the largest muskies. pl, Te A Yel SE LAA ERAT SAF CV FUSRTIA PIS SALE - USED TRUCKS - 1979 CHEV 2 TON BIG 10 With Cap. And the Port Perry Snowmobile Club will sponsor a street dance Fri- day and Saturday evenings on Queen Street. As in years past, Queen Street will be closed to traffic during the three days of events, and there will be sidewalk sales, food booths, and games of chance on the street in the block from Perry to Water Streets. There will also be a Kid- dies Parade, a Mutt Show, cake walk, the crowd-leasing super stars contest, and a play "Gunfight at the Gold 'Nugget Saloon staged by the Borelians. Down on the waterfront, there will be demonstrations on Saturday afternoon of wind-surfing and possibly hang-gliding. And also on Saturday afternoon, the Port Perry Legion will be sponsoring the Second Annual Tug-of-War contest with teams heaving for a trophy donated by the Legion. Sponsored by the Scugog Chamber of Commerce, Western Weekend has become a summer-time tradition in Port Perry. Posters detailing the times and locations of all planned events are now going up in many stores and businesses in the Township. So get out your blue jeans, denim shirt and western boots, and make plans for August 7-10 in Port Perry. New liquor regulations limit prices of drinks A recent change in the Ontario Liquor Licence Act regulations will limit the price of liquor served at Saturday night socials and other non-fund-raising events announced Frank Drea, Ontario Minister of Consumer and Commercial Relations. "We're putting a ceiling on the prices which may be charged for liquor, wine and beer sold under a special occasion permit," said Mr. Drea. "Unless the function is licensed as a fund-raising event or a community festi- val people should not be expected to pay retail prices or more for drinks." Under the new regulation prices for liquor sold at non-fund-raising events will be limited to $0.05 per ounce for draught beer, $0.65 per 12 ounce bottle of beer and $0.20 per bottle in excess of the LCBO purchase price for imported beer. The price of spirits such as rum, gin, vodka, rye, etc. will be limit- ed to $0.80 per one ounce serving, $1.00 per 1Y ounce serving and $1.20 per 1% ounce serving. Wine must be sold at a price per glass or bottle that does not yield more than 50 per cent in excess of the total price paid per bottle to the LCBO. The price ceiling on alco- holic beverages has been set to allow groups to pay for' costs such as hall rental, ice and mixes but will not allow a large profit. Other changes to the reg- ulations will: limit the number of fund-raising events any organization or group may hold to 10 each year. Thirty days notice must also be given to the Liquor Licence Board prior to the event to allow adequate time for investiga- tion; and limit the number of special occasion permits which may be issued for social events to 25 per year for any group or individual. It is a game for clear, crisp Saturday afternoons in October when the sun is golden and there is the smell of burning leaves in the air. I can recall as a kid going with my father to games in Ottawa's Landsdowne Park. There would often be more than just a hint of winter in the air, especially in the latter stages of the game when the October sun dropped from sight leaving the stadium in shadow. Possibly it is because of these early memories that I will never get used to the idea of football being played the first week in July. However, the League is off and running for another season, and already there has been one major surprise. The Argos won a game, clipping the Als neatly in the league opener. be The Als must have been thinking along the same lines that I am; namely that July is no time to be playing football. Nevertheless, a victory is still worth two points, no matter when the game is played. I hope that the long-suffering Argo fans savour this moment under the summer sun. But come September or October, we'll see if their fortunes are still as hot as July. My prediction is that the Argos will battle the Cats for the basement, just like years gone by. letters Put library issue to popular vote (From page 5) could our Government build the Sr. Citizens Apartments convenient to all ages, but it is our "War Memorial'.
