Bantams come close in Claremont tourney $ Fo a Yaak EAL MSs im LE Le After upsetting Galt 5-4, and Markham 6-3, Port Perry lost to Lindsay in the - championship game 114 in the Claremont tournament on Saturday, July 12. In the opening game against Galt Mark Goreski went to the mound for Port Perry with Brian Henricks doing the catching duties and together held the Galt team to just three hits. The rest of the team making great defen- sive plays to keep Galt off the bases. The heavy bat for Port Perry was Pete Ooster- holt with a home run and triple. } In the next game against Markham Steve Lee went to the mound for Port and held Markham to just five hits in four innings, then being relieved by Mark Goreski. Again the rest of the team made good solid defensive plays to keep Markham off the bases. The big bat in this game was M. Goreski with a home run and triple, also puttipg up hits were Brian Stephenson, = and Pete Oosterholt. In the Championship game Port Perry led off the first inning with 3 runs collecting another in the third inning. Mark Goreski was on the - mound again and held Lindsay to four hits after 4 innings and the rest of the boys again 'playing good solid defense. Then the roof fell in, in the fifth inning error after error gave Lindsay six runs on two hits, and in the sixth inning five runs on one hit. Lindsay winning 114. The coaches commend the boys for their play on and off the field during the tournament. On June 30, Schomberg came to Port Perry and were defeated 19-2 by the Port Bantams. Mark Goreski was on the mound and held Schomberg to three hits while striking out 16 batters. Hits went to Brian Stephen- son, Ken Harman, Peter Oosterholt, Brian Henricks, John Vaz and Harry Bolton. On July 7, Uxbridge came Terry Fox hailed by Durham crowd There were about 3,000 people at the Oshawa Centre last Wednesday evening - and that crowd was there to cheer Terry Fox. A hero, to young and old alike, and with every step he takes someone else gets to know him. To look at Terry you would not guess this 21-year old has had one leg amputated because of a cancerous tumor. Now, Terry Fox, is running a marathon across Canada to raise funds for cancer research. At the Oshawa Centre, Terry accepted over $10,600 in donations and pledges from the people of Oshawa and South Durham Region. Some familiar faces from Port Perry were there to see and encourage Terry. This was one of the largest crowds out to greet him since he started his run in Newfoundland. What courage this young man Wilkin captures by Linda Parry The ladies of Summerlea Golf Course sponsored their own club tournament on Tuesday, July 8. The day tournament results were as follows: low gross score-Joan Wilkin; low net score-Linda Parry; low total putts-Velma Wray; high total putts-Mary Field; low score hidden hole- Noreen Leahy; low putts hidden hole-Clara Chant; high score hidden hole-Mary Cannon; high putts hidden hole-Jean Skerratt; Guess your score-Bev Brown and Velma Wray had a chip in on hole 12. Soccer MINI White-1 Purple-1 Scoring for the White was Scott McTavish. Scoring for the Purple team was Jason Cochrane. Dark Blue-2 Orange-0 Scoring for Dark Blue was Shawn Plain. SQUIRT Light Blue-3 Green-0 Scoring for Light Blue was Ryan Larocca with 1, Ethan Lavereau with 2. Scoring for Red were Brett Puckrin with 3, Clair Cornish 2 and Julia Croxall with 1 for the Dark Blue. ladies tourney 11 eveilung counts were: low gross-Nancy Andrews; low net-Lori Locke; low score hidden hole was split between Jackie Courtice, Chris Ostertag and Mary Pipher; high score hidden hole-Marg Burnfield; and a birdie was landed by Mary Hawes on hole 18. The tournament and a lovely luncheon was enjoyed by al the ladies and a discussion regarding fund raising was well received by everyone and due to the enthusiasm by the group, raifle tickets will be avail- able on an afghan for ap August draw. Kinsmen-1 Drapeau Cartage-0 Scoring for Kinsmen was James Stubbs. MOSQUITO Sportsland forfeited to Port Perry Star. Comco Mfg-10 Port Perry Chrysler-3 Scoring for Comco were Gerry Harrison-2, James Cawker with 3, Kevin Jones with 1, Shawn Fisher with 4. Scoring for Port Perry Chrysler were Jonathan All- sop with 1, Mark Stokes 1, and Ray Daniels with 1. must have to get up at dawn every morning, (rain or shine), and run. He has 'experienced quite a bit of pain as his artificial leg does not fit properly. "Terry Fox is running to beat cancer into the ground', the buttons and T-shirts claim. We hope he finds the strength to go all the way and reach his home in B.C. come November. The Scugog Branch of the Cancer Society has collected to date $450.00 for the Terry Fox run. The employees of Mother Jacksons got togeth- er and collected a large donation and we thank you for your support. Our downtown streets and sidewalks are not in the best shape but the boxes for donations to-the Terry Fox Run are in all Port Perry banks. Film will be screened A controversial film about organized crime in Canada will be screened October 1 for Durham Region council- lors and members of council from the area municipalities in Durham. The film is reported to show how organized crime operates, and also is said to contain graphic scenes of violence. The film will be screened at the regular meeting of Durham council October 1, in the council chambers of the Regional Headquarters building on Rossland Road, Whitby. to Port and were handed a 5-3 defeat. Mark Goreski started the game and gave way to Steve Lee in the third inning and held Uxbridge to four hits and did not allow a run. Steve came in and did an excellent job of relieving. On July 8th Port Perry travelled to Unionville, the league leading and undefeat- ed team. Mark Goreski went to the mound with Brian Henricks catching. Mark had 12 strikeouts while again the rest of the team played good solid defense and when the dust settled Port won 74 \ wo with hits going to Ken Harman, Brian Stephenson, Mark Goreski 2 home runs, Peter Oosterholt 2 singles, Steve Lee 2 hits and Ken Elliott. Come out and watch these boys and support them. Visitor from Germany Karin Listringhaus [right] is a 16-year old from Neuenrade, West Germany, near Frankfurt, and she is spending several weeks in Canada with the Phillips family of R.R. 2, Blackstock.
